NOVICA, in association with National Geographic, offers thousands of limited edition and one-of-a-kind gifts, jewelry, and home decor treasures handmade by master artists and artisans throughout the world. Eclectic squares evoke the cohesive harmony of this hand-woven tapestry. Walter Paucar designs the piece, its geometric details suggesting the profound and ancient meanings of the Inca calendar. The Inca calendar is based on observations of the sun's movements and the moon's phases. The huato (year) is solar, but the quilla (months) depend upon lunar calculations. Certain economic, social and religious activities correspond to each month, accompanied by appropriate festivals and sacrifices. Historical sources attribute the division into 12 months to Mayta Capac. It is also believed that Pachacutec ordered the construction of the most important Inca observatories, such as the Intihuatana (solar clock). Titled "Calendario" in Spanish. Artisan Info: "I was born in August of 1956 in a small town in the Central Andes of Peru. I come from a long line of artisans. My father, Santiago Paucar Amara, was a well-known weaver who won several national prizes. Many of his finest works ended up in Europe, in such countries as Germany, Italy, and France. I began working with my dad at the age of fourteen and, at the age of seventeen, I headed off to the University of Cerro de Pasco.
