This is a side-by-side comparison of ten high DHA omega-3 fish oil supplements: Doctor's Best DHA 500 From Calamari, Doctor's Best Vegetarian DHA, Carlson Super DHA Gems, Nordic Naturals DHA Strawberry, Nordic Naturals DHA Extra, NOW Foods DHA-500, Barlean's Organic Oils - Ultra DHA, Nature's Way Mega-DHA, Jarrow Formulas Max DHA (Blue Label), and Jarrow Formulas Max DHA (Beige Label).

There are three major components of omega-3 in most of these products: EPA (which is good for your heart, circulatory system, lowering triglycerides, depression and mood orientation, and is a powerful anti-inflammatory for soothing joint pains), DHA (which is good for your mental acuity, or if you are pregnant, nursing an infant, or for children), and "other." Other omega-3s, like DPA and SDA, are types of fatty acids which are easily converted to EPA in the body. In most fish oils, the amount of these other fatty acids is low, but in highly concentrated oils, it can be a significant amount. The important components are EPA and DHA.

The question is often asked: Which is more important, EPA or DHA? The following may provide some insight.

Doctor's Best has published a comprehensive evaluation of DHA on its website. It is authored by Dr. Parris M. Kidd, Chief Science Officer of Doctor's Best, and one of the foremost authorities in the world on fish oil and magnesium supplementation. I have incorporated portions of that evaluation here, which is re-published with the permission of Doctor's Best and Dr. Kidd.

DHA (DocosaHexaenoic Acid, omega-3) is a building block for the cell membranes that manage life processes.

This is a very good supplement and a reliable brand. DHA or dicosaheaxaenoic acid is an important part of any omega 3 supplement. In general, the price of a bottle of omega 3 correlates with the amount of DHA and EPA that the formula contains. Following my nutricionist's suggestion, I am taking two pills of DHA-500 a day. It helps memory and other brain functions. Beyond my personal experience, I should say that there are several scientific studies that associate DHA with psychological functions. For example, Dr. David Perlmutter, in his book "The better brain book" quotes a couple of research published by pretigious journals that link DHA with a decrease in depression and with general improvement in mood. I think that several variables, such as your current diet and your age can influence on your perception of the positive effects that DHA has on your brain. If you are a young person who eat a lot of fish the effect of taking this supplement will be less evident than if you are an old person and don't include fatty fish in your diet. In any case, I believe that DHA is one of the best supplements in the market today. I have recommended it to many relatives and friends and they love it. A bottle of 180 softgels will last for 3 months, enough time to experience by yourself the positive effect of this supplement.

I researched and did the math on just about every major fish oil supplement out there. AtLarge, Biotest, Nature Made, Primal Blueprint, the list goes on.

These contain more EPA/DHA per softgel for less money than any other company offers.

They are enteric coated and smooth, and go down easier than some others. They are more concentrated which means more of the oil is EPA/DHA and less of other oils.

Pair it with their Ultra Omega 3 which has the reversed dose of 500 EPA / 250 DHA and you have a perfect 750/750 of EPA and DHA. One a day of each keeps the doctor away? We can hope!

This was the best deal I could find, without a doubt. The pills are fairly large, but they go down quite easily. I have not experienced any fishy aftertaste or belching, so the enteric coating must be doing it's job. For the money, 180 soft gels is pretty hard to beat.

Our Dr recommended 1200mg of DHA to my husband a day because his blood shows he has a higher probability of getting Alzheimer's disease when he is older. He said this can lessen the probability. It has also brought our Cholesterol levels way down. This is a great price for a great product. No burp or fish oil taste at all. We will keep on using this.

Our daughter has several disabilities related to fetal alcohol and other things we may not be aware of. (we adopted her). We have tried so many things over the years to help her with her learning disabilities. This was recommended to us, and we see a remarkable change in her thought processes. I would recommend it to all students who struggle with learning disabilities.

I suffer from minor depression - have for years. This cured it. I am pretty sure that this supplement allowed me to finally get past that nagging issue of getting into a rut with depression and negative thoughts. There - I said it - hmm... anyway, it is true, I noticed this effect after switching from a different formulation of fish oil based on the recommendations in 'Grain Brain'. The Depression Cure book also mentions fish oil but did not mention the importance of the DHA component. So, yeah, this product works. If you suffer from mild to moderate depression, give this a try for a couple weeks to a month.
