I got curious about essential oils on my hunt for a solution to my dry, curly hair. I heard some talk about Rose Hip Seed Oil and how it can work well in thin hair because it doesnt coat the hair it absorbs and holds in moisture. With furthur research I learned that this oil contains vitamin A which helps assist with cell regeneration, delay the effects of skin aging, and promotes collagen and elastin levels to increase. The results are smoother, firmer and more youthful skin. There is also a high amount of essential fatty acid acids and Vitamin E which further promotes heathy skin. It is supposedly successful in treating stretch marks, psoriasis, eczema, hyper-pigmentation, uv damage, wrinkles, scars from surgery, acne and burns, dermatitis, age spots, burns, age spots, brittle nails and dry, damaged hair.

Because it is a dry oil, it will soak into the skin easily and not leave a greasy residue, but dont use too much. It spreads very easily so you only need a little bit and it will last a long time. Even though you can use it un-diluted on your hair or skin you can also add it to creams, lotions, moisturizers, conditioners ect. It is not recommended for use on sever acne or on very oily skin.

My first time using Rose Hip Seed Oil I added a few drops to a combination of Suave Moisturizing Almond and Shea Butter Conditioner and Garnier Fructis Sleek and Shine 3 minute Deep Conditioner, then I combed evenly through my hair and left in for about 15 minutes before rinsing out. That day I did notice an increased softness and less frizz, although no extra shine like I was hoping for. I have natural curly hair thats shoulder length and pretty fine, although I have alot of hair and it is dry and can get frizzy.

This light-bodied oil disappears like water on my aged skin. The results were almost immediately soothing and smoothing. Plus, it has imparted a more even rosy tone which de-accentuates the patches of redness and even the appearance of the fine blood vessels near the skin surface around nose and cheeks.I have put rose hip oil in conditioner and it improves the appearance of my hair by making it more lustrous and smooth.

I recently discovered the benefits of rosehip seed oil for stretch marks and thought I would give this brand a try since this was the cheapest price on amazon, and I had used the NOW brand shea butter in the past. However, once I used this oil I immediately noticed a fishy smell (identical to that of cod liver oil like a prior reviewer stated), and the oil is thin and CLEAR. From what I had researched, rosehip seed oil definitely has a faint smell, but should not be fishy and the oil should be thick and a reddish-amber color. I decided to buy another brand immediately to compare the two products. I ended up buying the NZ Fusions brand (which is certified USDA ORGANIC and says so on the label). Hugeeee difference. The NZ Fusions brand does not smell fishy and is thick and amber colored. Go figure. Needless to say I havent used the remainder of the Now brand, nor do I plan to in the future. Straight in the trash. Just be aware, that sometimes you get what you pay for.

FYI: rosehip seed oil has a short life (about 6 months). However, you can prolong the life of the oil by keeping it in the refrigerator. So perhaps the Now brand is not to blame, but the seller may have had it too long. Either way, the Now brand does not state how this oil is havested (expeller pressed, refined, unrefined, cold pressed etc.) and that is a major drawback in the "natural" oil market.

I've used rosehip oil in the past and it's a brilliant product for moisturizing and fading skin discolorations- it was recommended by my dermatologist back in primary school after I'd picked an acne scar on my forehead so many times that the patch of skin had turned almost black. Within 2-3 months of use the scar had completely faded and my complexion had cleared up really well (I had a LOT of acne scars). That was in Australia where I bought Kosmea rosehip oil for ~$20. After moving to the US and failing to find the Kosmea brand in stores, I was pretty surprised to find this NOW Foods brand carrying the oil for only $6- what a bargain! Unfortunately after using it the first time I realized that my particular bottle had gone bad:
- potent, good quality RH oil is usually amber coloured, but this was pale yellow.
- this RH oil smelled horrible, like cod liver oil, which is not good and means it is too old.
- normally RH oil is absorbed well when applied onto damp skin, but this one wasn't; instead I was stuck with a very oily face for the entire night, which did nothing since the oil cannot fully benefit the skin if it hasn't even penetrated the skin.

I didn't have a good experience with the bottle I'd picked up- either I was just unlucky or this is indicative of the general quality of rosehip oil this brand produces, I'm not sure. The problem with purchasing oils is that they deteriorate after a period of time but there's no way to tell how long they've been sitting. I think I'll give this brand one more try and purchase another bottle in store, but my tip is to unscrew the cap and smell the oil before buying- if it smells fishy, it's gone off so pick another bottle.
