Ok everyone, this is my first review...so bare with me.

March 31st, 2012 my car was broken into and my thief/thieves got me for roughly $700.00 worth of electronics.

-------------

After searching around and reviewing many alarm models that are on the market, I ended up choosing this alarm because it was the most affordable, packed some great features, and is made by a name I know I can trust. If you are looking for a product that is going to protect your vehicle, this is a great choice. The only feature I have found that it DOESN'T have is REMOTE START, though it supposedly has the option (I haven't been able to find out how it is utilized through my research). I installed this unit myself, therefore I have read all about it.

ABOUT THE ALARM:

Ability to monitor your Dome Light, make it flash (if alarm is triggered), make it stay on for 30 seconds after you leave the vehicle.

Ability to monitor door triggers/Switches. Basically if the door is opened, the alarm is triggered.

Ability to monitor a trunk/hood pin. If the hood/trunk is opened, the alarm is triggered.

Ability to monitor ignition switch position. If the key is turned, the alarm is triggered.

Ability to disable the starter from functioning. If the alarm is armed, the starter is disabled.

Ability to lock/unlock your doors.

Ability to wire TWO of your own functions to the AUX channels. (Turn stereo on, pop trunk as examples)

Ability to detect vibrations. (The Shock sensor is built into the brain)

Ability to be wired into your lights, so they will flash when alarm is armed/unarmed/triggered.

Ability to control a BRIGHT BLUE LED to warn thieves.

At first, I was skeptical to purchase this online from Amazon. I didn't want to pay anything more than what I had to for installation. The product came with everything I needed for installation. The product is great! The 2-way remote is kind of bulky and takes up space on your keychain but if you're paranoid like me and always wonder if you locked your doors or not, it is the greatest invention ever. It shows you that your car is either locked or not locked. That way you do not have to walk all the way back to your car to check if the car is locked.

The two-way remote had issues within the first year - display started to fail, and you had to press reeeaalllllyyyyy hard on the buttons to make anything happen. And if the alarm's shock sensor has a small trigger (not enough to trigger the alarm, but enough to make the alarm beep 10 times), the two-way remote will beep like every 2 minutes indefinitely, which kills the battery. Had to change the battery on the two-way remote like once a month, sometimes more.

After lots of frustration with the two-way remote, I remembered it also has a normal remote. I started using it, and it works fine, for about 3-4 months. Then same issue. You have to kind of "squeeze" the remote while you press the button, or it won't always work.

So, the alarm itself is great. No issues or complaints at all. But the remotes are the weak point.

Update 11/04/2012:
Again, the battery (new NiMH Rechargeables) in the two way pager died overnight while I slept. Went to bed with 2 bars on the battery life, woke up with a completely off two way pager. Pretty useless to have a $105 Car Alarm and a $150 installation price, only to have your two-way pager turn completely off in the middle of the night when you're asleep and your car is most likely to be broken into. The manufacturer needs to improve the battery life very significantly from its current battery life and greatly improve it's accuracy of the battery charge indicator on the two-way pager. Again, a car alarm is useless if your 2-way pager stops while you're sleeping. Giving it 4 stars definitely not 5 (I'd really like to give it 3.5, but a 3 is a little low).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update 10/24/2012:

Be forewarned that the 2-way pager unit is a battery hog if you are using standard 1.2v rechargeable batteries. They will only last about 3 days then they will unexpectedly go out and your 2 way pager will go dead. This 2 way pager requires a higher 1.5volt battery, which are the disposable batteries, however they'll only last about 4 days and then die. So pick your posion.

Be warned that you need to be prepared to always carry a second backup standard AAA battery (whether rechargeable or not rechargeable) in your pocket because the 2 way pager will die out on you when you least expect it (the battery indicator is not very good, it has 4 bars and a new battery only makes it go to 3 bars). This makes the Viper Car Alarm useless and completely ineffective when you are out and about when the battery goes out on you, or you wake up and the battery has died and the 2 way pager is dead.

Had less than three months. My 2-way remote went blank. I changed the batteries out and nothing happened. Totally dead! I didn't drop it in water or on the ground. Took over to Best Buy where I had it installed. Said remote is dead. I called Viper and they told me the warranty is void because I bought it at Amazon.com. The end. Here is a list of unauthorized dealers [...] You are screwed if anything gets stolen out of your vehicle. You will not get any money from Viper. Amazon did help me though. I noticed on the replacement remote someone commented that they are on their third one. On the viper site someone said the same thing. This company is getting away with murder. This is bs. Best Buy doesn't even sell this and they are my authorized dealer where I live. How did amazon (third party) get it at a way cheaper price. Because viper doesn't have to give them a warranty. Weird!!!! I give Amazon 10 stars. The alarm portion works great for now. I can't give anything higher than two stars because the remotes are part of the item and Viper is not standing behind their product.
