Book Description

November 21, 1996 Npr Interviews
There is nothing quite like an interview on National Public Radio. It leaves room for unrehearsed responses, intimate conversation, and witty repartee. Now marking the third year of the series, The NPR Interviews 1996 offers an especially rich and eclectic roundup. Assembled here are the past year's most entertaining and provocative conversations on the air - with artists, celebrities, intellectuals, and other characters - revealing a vivid narrative portrait of our culture. This year's volume features three new categories, " Sports," " Music," and " Anniversaries," alongside readers' perennial favorites, such as" America Talking." A mainstay of the collection, the " Story of the Year," looks at recent acts of terrorism and local violence, such as the Oklahoma City bombing. Other interviews include: Maurice Sendak's disclosure of his unlikely inspiration for the creatures in Where the Wild Things Are, David Brinkley's admission about inadvertently inspiring Jesse Helms's political care

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Even when the topic isn't explicitly political, there is something politically invigorating about National Public Radio; in a world of full-contact political shout shows and ever-shrinking sound bites, it's a chance to hear actual conversations about topics folks like us care about. Just one example is the back-fence chat between Jennifer Dunn, Republican member of Congress, and Pamela Dunn (no relation), single mother and longtime welfare recipient. The two met for a program pairing welfare moms with female legislators. In the course of the conversation, Jennifer admits that knowing Pamela convinced her to drop her opposition to the Earned Income Tax Credit, a tax break for the working poor. And where else could you hear an interviewer (it was Linda Wertheimer) catch Colin Powell completely off-guard by asking him if he thought it was OK for Sam Nunn or Phil Gramm to want to become chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff?

From Publishers Weekly

Anybody who's ever wondered about the power of radio in a TV kind of world has only to ask a writer who has been interviewed on All Things Considered, Morning Edition or Weekend Edition to find out. The jump in book sales alone would be proof that people listen to these programs and pay attention to the interviews. Now for the third year, All Things Considered host Robert Siegel has pulled together the most interesting interviews arranged into subjects. This year, The NPR Interviews, 1996 includes William Maxwell, Orham Pamuk, Daniel Pinkwater, Maurice Sendak, Julia Child, Leonard Nimoy, Kay Redfield, David Attenborough, Jane Goodall, Jack Miles, Eartha Kitt, Bryn Terfel, Harry Wu, Shimon Peres, Jonas Salk, George Foreman and Colin Powell.
