The best band nobody ever heard of,
By
This review is from: NRBQ - One in a Million (DVD)
This DVD is short (just 9 songs) and NRBQ fans will be wishing they did this song or that song, but it is very good and it seems to be the only live NRBQ video available. The boys really tear it up on "Rocket In My Pocket", "12 Bar Blues", "Crazy Like A Fox", and guest saxman Klem Klimek does a great solo on "Here Comes Terry". The sound quality is very good, and it's very exciting to see Al Anderson in action on guitar. He is one of the very best and most unique guitarists in America. Too bad he doesn't play with the Q anymore. His presence in this video is another good reason to see it or own it. I'm giving this DVD 4 stars instead of 5 only because it's not a full NRBQ show. If it had 9 more songs and featured some of Terry Adams hilarious between song commentaries it would be perfect.

NRBQ are one of those wonderful bands that have had a rabid following for decades, yet are unknown to most music listeners- mainly because their music is either too out of fashion, or just too unclassifiable to be played on radio. One minute they're rocking out to "Shake, Rattle and Roll" and they next they're doing a country version of Mario Lanza's "Be Mine". From there they'll segue into a Sun Ra tune, and just as smoothly into "Wild Weekend", from the 60s teen movie of that name.
Watching NRBQ is a treat for musicians and listeners alike. First, they could teach most bands a thing or two about playing together and connecting with an audienc. Watching them play "Shake, Rattle and Roll"- a favorite with my band- I only wish we could play it with half as much everygy as NRBQ do. Second, it's amazing to see a band having so much sheer fun on stage after playing together as long as they have- over thirty five years! This disk is primarily a set from a 1989 concert when Big Al Anderson (their third guitarist) was with the band. He's gone off to pursue a successful career, but the band continues soldiering on with bassist Joey Spampinato's little brother Jimmy on guitar, and the bonus tracks include a recent music video ("Dummy") featuring the current lineup. My only complaint is that the performance - 9 songs- seems far too short. I just love watching NRBQ. If you love music played with heart, you will too.

Your 12 bar lesson on the "Q' starts here,
By Mark Hutchins "Been there, did a BUNCH of that" (Seattle, WA planet Earth) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: NRBQ - One in a Million (DVD)
If you're already a fan, then you already know. If, however, you're not, this is the place to start. NRBQ are a national treasure, hell, Keith, yeah, that Keif, calls them the greatest live band ever [he hand picked Joey, Q bassist, vocalist, for the band that he assembled to back Chuck Berry in the "Hail, Hail Rock'n'Roll" spectacle].
But here's the deal, NRBQ are first and foremost a life altering experience to witness live. Especially with big Al absolutely blistering the pink paisley off the Telecaster that happened to be his weapon of massive rockin' on this particular evening. I have pretty much everything the Q have released and if I could only keep one item it would be this DVD, because as brilliant as their records are, this is the one thing that takes me back to the jaw-dropping awe I felt the first time I saw the band live [which was several years prior to this release]. No band can tear it up quite like Terry, Joey, Tommy and Big Al, who all are such ace musicians that due to the casual ease they display, while in spite of what for mere mortals would be the performance of a life time, to witness the boys here, belies the absolute command they have of their respective instruments, to say nothing of the pure music that must flow through their veins in lieu of blood. I could go on and on [and those who know me would testify to that fact] but, although the other reviews posted here are positive, I worry that you, potential listener, may not be moved enough to make "the purchase" that could change every thing you ever thought you knew about the band that changed your life that you didn' yet know about. So I implore you, git it!!! And then buy "At Yankee Stadium" and "Grooves In Orbit" at which point you'll have become a "Q" people. Either that or you don't like music to begin with and I wasn't talking to you anyhow!!!!!!!!!
