NTI Media Maker 8 badly messed up my computer. Immediately after installation I began to receive a Media Center Receiver Service error that repeatedly flashed on my screen every 4 or 5 seconds, making my computer unusable until, in between flashes, I was able to uninstall the program. But then I found that the uninstall was not complete. It failed to remove a dll that interfered with other CD burning programs on my computer. I could not even reinstall my old NTI CD&DVD Maker 7 program and get it to work correctly.

I sent off a panic email to NTI tech services, and after a day passed without a response, I called. The technician had me email her the appcompat.txt from the Media Center Receiver Service error in order to help her (I thought) discover what was causing the problem. During the next week I sent 2 emails asking when I might hear from her, and did not receive a response. On the seventh day I called. She informed me (these are her words exactly) "I have been overwhelmed with work and have not been able to look at the file." This lack of service is not acceptable. I asked for a refund, and the administrative assistant at customer service said she would request a full refund, since I had not received any service. Her office manager turned the request down, saying the problem was "specific to my computer" and thus the company had no responsibility.

The Media Center Receiver Service error (with the appcompat.txt file) was sent to Microsoft automatically when it was flashing on my screen, and I contacted Microsoft directly myself to make sure technical support there was really aware of the problem. Apparently Media Maker 8 is incompatible with Microsoft Media Center (which came with my version of Windows XP).

Media maker 8 is a good software program for easily copying CDs and DVDs. It does the job easily, quickly and error free. But I had an issue with compatility with System Mechanic. It seems that the NTI Media Maker uses non-standard registry entries which get flagged for removal by System Mechanic. Until I realized what was happening i reinstalled Media maker several times, and it does take a long time to install, along with the patch. Once I realized that System Mechanic was removing NTI's registry settings, I modified System Mechanic to bypass Media Maker. Now, all is well. I did send a note to NTI informing them of the problem and asking if they would consider using industry standard registry entries. They skirted the question. I have many apps on my PC and this NTI product is the only one that had an issue with the registry cleaner. I suppose this isn't just System Mechanic but other reg cleaners as well.

This installed easily. The funtions are well organized and easy to find. It's easy to put my files on DVDs. When I couldn't get my AVI files to be burned to a vdieo DVD, I contacted support and got a quick response telling me that only some AVI files are supported and how to find a free program to convert my AVI files to WMV files that are supported by the DVD video function. I can make a CD of my MP3 files by just dragging and dropping them in the Audio CD function and I can make a CD with my MP3 files on it just by using a different function with the same easy interface. I have used similar products that are to confusing to do what I want. I just want a program that is easy to use and does what I want and this is it.

I've used this since about 2005 because i've bought Acer products since around 1998 or so and this comes standard on the machines along with the now Acer-Emachines. I have never had any problems with the program at all,(discs of course) but thats just normal. The interface is extremely easy to use, all the different icons come up in a cool circle type interface navigational tool and you just pic it, find your folder and your off. The other thing i like is that i copy a lot of movies and DVD videos, and there is an actual VIDEO_TS button to click on to copy that particular format. You won't find that on Roxio, Cyberlink or Nero, you have to go through other processes to copy discs that will actually read on DVD or Blu ray players which is a pain in the rear.

Now on adding this to machines like HP, Dell, Toshiba, Asus etc i'm not sure what issues it may have, i know it was specifically designed and made to run on Acer, and Emachines, if there are others i've never seen them. If you are installing this on another brand of computer that may be the issues i see with some reviewers. But i don't have a problem because Acer, and Emachine is all i ever use because Acer has given me years of hassle free service and are extremely reliable, also now that Acer bought out the big E, they are great as well. So if you like this program buy it, if you own any of the forementioned machines you already have it and probably love it like myself. Its quick easy and there isn't a lot of hassle to use it.

On one last note, there is a con, which i forgot. The audio is not i repeat NOT for MP3 use, i use Nero for that which i like a lot. The audio is only a Wave editor on this edition, on version 9, i have no clue, but for everything else this thing is golden. I would put 4 stars, but my fingers won't allow it. Enjoy.
