However, we had a somewhat frightening experience the first time we used the product, and have since returned it. After my daughter had been drinking from the cup for a little while, she smiled at me and I noticed a large red chunk of something on her lips, and another in her mouth. I immediately wiped off/fished out the stuff, and discovered that it was pieces of the soft rubbery coating from the lid! Apparently she had been chewing on the lid and the coating came right off, in little chunky flakes. I'm sure it's unlikely that a single piece would come off large enough to be a true choking hazard, but it's possible. And choking hazard or not, I certainly don't want to worry about my daughter ingesting this rubber stuff.
If your child isn't prone to chewing on things, maybe this cup is fine; it definitely has some great reviews from other parents. But for my teething daughter, it's not worth the risk.
I'll try to upload some photos so show the damage. By the way, Amazon was great in accepting our return (they always are).
My only complaint is that the replacement spouts are a bit difficult to find and tend to cost almost as much as the sippy cup itself. Others have complained about the spout tearing easily, but I haven't had this issue.
As a former nanny, I've used other types of sippy cups and this one doesn't compare. I truly believe that this NUK sippy cup is the easiest to transition your baby off the bottle, especially for those who want an early start. I really love this sippy cup and I HIGHLY recommend the NUK Silicone Spout Learner Cup as a starter one above all others. It's a great purchase and one that you won't regret!
*The Hello Kitty design is even cuter in person!
The only down fall is if you need extra Spouts, as our LO has bitten through the silicone, the Spouts cost as much as a new cup. I've looked in store for extra's and on NUK's website, but the only place that sells them is here on Amazon.
***Cons: Be aware that you might get a defective nipple piece. My first one had a ventilation hole that was not efficient enough. As my 10 month old baby drinks, the suction builds pressure in the mouthpiece. The vent hole doesn't seem to be opening even though I've tried to "stretch" it out with pointy objects. So what happens when too much pressure builds up? While she drinks, the mouthpiece caves in where my baby's chin is, causing the milk to spill out onto her chin and shirt. It's not like the whole cup dumps out on her so it's not disastrous, but it's important to know before buying. I tried to fix the problem by cutting the vent hole slightly bigger. That might work while the cup is half full, but I tried it with the cup full and I was astonished when milk shot in my baby's eye haha. Luckily I bought 2 of these bottles so now when I see the pressure cave in the mouthpiece I just push on the vent hole to release air, or just keep a towel nearby to mop my baby's face. Perhaps it was a defective cup. To me, it's still worth buying this cup.Read more ›
