4.0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect solution for digitizing vinyl
As the middle-aged owner of LOTS of vinyl from the 50's to early 80's, much of which will never see the light of digital release, the Numark TTi is a godsend. I've found no easier way to rip vinyl into my iTunes library, even though I don't really do it the easy way that Numark envisioned - more on that later.

The quality of the turntable is very good...

2.0 out of 5 stars Great Idea, too many corners cut...
First of all, as a record player, I would expect an automatic arm and return when an album ends... but this one is completely manual. And who wants a record player without a lid? You'll have to shell out $30.00 or more for a cover, and the cover just sits on top of the player, doesn't attach, so each time you change a record, you get to lift the entire cover off, and...

The quality of the turntable is very good considering its price. The base is sturdy and heavy. The tonearm is easy to balance and includes a counterweight and anti-skate control. The needle and pickup seem to be pretty decent, and the buttons and knobs are of good quality. My only complaints are that (1) the USB port and gain control are buried underneath the unit and cannot be accessed while the unit is operating. At a minimum it would be nice if the gain control was more accessible so you could tweak output levels in real time for each LP, because they're all different; (2) you must manually operate the tonearm, which can be a dicey proposition after a couple cups of coffee; and (3) it's a belt-drive, not direct-drive turntable, which means the speed control is not precise and the flimsy rubber belt will eventually dry out and fail. But I guess that's what you get for $140.

The software provided is basic but will do the job if you're not too picky. I don't fall into that camp - I like to have more control over sampling rates, noise suppression and gaps between tracks, among other things, so I use Sound Studio (sold separately) on my Mac instead of the software included with the unit. I've also not tried ripping directly to an iPod plopped into the Numark's dock - that's WAY too easy and out-of-control for me!

Overall a good product for the price and it does exactly what it says it will do.

5.0 out of 5 stars More than I expected, April 2, 2009

I love this recorder. My records are in good shape and it transfers records to i-pod perfectly. If you need to us software on your computer to take out pops it will do that also. I have found I enjoy listening to my records on our surround system in stero, it does that too.

It does more than I expected and does it wonderfully. It is not for professionals, but for someone like me, it does everything I wanted it to do at a reasonable price. There are many out there that have more features, but they cost considerably more. The delivery was quick and the price is right.

Do yourself a favor and order now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works with my current software, May 16, 2009

I was concerned about the cheap packaged software that uses ipod technology to initially capture the music. I want wav files only and took a shot that I could create them with something I already had. After I configured the turntable as my default music input Roxio Creator 2009 Ultimate picked it right up and defaulted to wav format for recording. I already had it on my system for converting home made video files from VHS.

Being a doubting Thomas, I hadn't ordered the $40 turntable cover until I made sure I wasn't going to throw the turntable out the window in frustration. It will now have a place of honor where my scanner used to be and will be permanently connected to my system. (300 albums & 80 singles to convert.)

Useful purchase for $202.00 on sale.

I love it!

I have a huge collection of vinyl records with great stuff on them. This puts them right on my computer, on a CD to my home and car! Fun!

The only set back for me was the scatches! It doen't have a "clean up" program. I must get one. No biggy!

The other drag was... I over looked... it doen't work with mt 5th generation "Nano"! Ipod, I don't have... my fault. Will work with a 3rd generation "Nano" that, my son has. And it copied the music right too it.

Great turntable by it own!!!!! Must have and the price is right!

RICCOH,
Colorado

Converting my vinyl to MP3 could not be easier. Now I need to find the time to listen to all my records again so I can convert.

First of all, as a record player, I would expect an automatic arm and return when an album ends... but this one is completely manual. And who wants a record player without a lid? You'll have to shell out $30.00 or more for a cover, and the cover just sits on top of the player, doesn't attach, so each time you change a record, you get to lift the entire cover off, and the place it back on.

Sound - Varies greatly from record to record. Making the manual adjustments to get the sound right seems to be a never ending project. One record will sound great, then you put another record on and you have to start the whole process over again. The gain control is very inconveniently placed on the bottom back side, underneath the turntable. And the RCA cables are built in, so you can't upgrade or lengthen the cable without an adapter.

The iPod dock on the record player works fine and is a great advancement for a modern player. You can play your music from the iPod, which is also a great feature.

When recording, I've had problems with the iPod timing out (going to sleep), which is inconvenient. When recording with the USB cable to the computer, the EZ Audio Converter, make sure you update the software prior to using. Audacity requires a more advanced a patient person to use.

Overall, for the price, I wouldn't pay more than 150.00 for this unit due to its limitations.

What a great product, easy to use, sounds great! A little sensitive on reading the records, any dirt or tiny particle will make it skip, but other than that, i'm very happy with the purchase.

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent price and only DECENT sound, October 22, 2009
This review is from: NUMARK TURNTBL W/DIRECT TO IPOD RECORDING NIC (Electronics)
The good:

The turntable comes with Audacity, a program that allows you to record your... well, records to your PC or Mac in the highest quality possible
(6144 kbps./96.000 kHz/32 bit!). The program is a bit glitchy and 1 out of 10 recordings will end with program not responding or shutting down. But this is the best software available for HQ recording, so live with it :)

The bad:

The sound.... well.... leaves something to be desired. Vinyl is a better medium than CD for preserving sound, but THIS turntable will hardly prove it to you. The sound IS smooth (like always with this medium), but it is not... powerful, especially vocals, which sound "underrepresented" among the instruments. If you like, you can compare the sound of my Numark TTi USB:

and Technics SL-1200 MK2:

It works well. Kinda of a pain to balance the needle arm. Instructions were pretty straightforward and REALLY brief. The associated recording software has a neat feature which reads the album and retrieves data off the web. Only works with non-compilation albums (or that has been my experience thus far).
