What Other Items Do Customers Buy After Viewing This Item?
I liken the NVIDIA Shield like a souped up, 21st century Gameboy that allows adults who like to game carry a piece of hardware that doesn't look like a toy. Weighing just under 0.9 lbs, the NVIDIA Shield looks like any old tablet on the market today. however, when you look under the hood or turn it on to play your first game, you will realize this is not your run of the mill tablet.
Coming in at $299, you really need to ask yourself "what is my main purpose for buying a tablet?" This is not an iPad killer, nor does it try to be. it is not a Kindle Fire replacement, as it doesn't try to be that either. The NVIDIA Shield is a true gamer's tablet that tries to be the 2nd screen and portable alternative for those of us who are serious about gaming - and expect to have the same quality functions and features regardless of the platform. Currently the selection of games optimized for the NVIDIA Shield are limited. However, you can still access popular titles from the Google Play store. And one of the better features is the NVIDIA Shield's ability to stream games from my home PC.
The NVIDIA Shield feels solid, looks simple, but carries a decent punch with its hardware. Running Android 4.4.2 Kit Kat, the Shield is powered by a Tegra K1(Quad ARM Cortex-A15 @ 2.2GHz) processor with graphics supported by a Kepler-based GPU with 192 shader ALUs. It's 8" IPS panel displays 1920x1200 resolution (283 PPI) and delivers a stunningly vivid visual gaming experience. It has 2GB of RAM with 16GB eMMC on-board storage. But no gaming tablet is complete without expandable storage as the Shield has a MicroSD slot capable of adding an additional 128GB of storage. Of course there is wireless connectivity with dual-band 2.4/5GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 LE (which was surprising to me).Read more ›

Wow is the Nvidia SHIELD is powerful. It's nearly twice as fast on the 3dMark benchmark tests as the Tegra 4 processor the SHIELD's new K1 chip replaces. It's also twice as fast as the iPad Air. The SHIELD essentially puts an Xbox 360 or a PS3 in the palm of your hand.
The SHIELD Tablet has a subtle industrial design, largely masking the amazing processor under the hood that makes this the ultimate handheld gaming device (at the moment).
It features an 8 inch 1920x1200 full HD display that is very responsive and accurate to touch with fantastic image quality. Its front facing onboard speakers also sound great.
The Nvidia SHIELD can be plugged into an HD television and placed into 'console mode' where it will turn off its internal display and function like a game console complete with its own interface and store. It works well, but I found exited games dumps me back to an Android desktop and not the easy to navigate menu I initially started with. I suspect it might work better if I use an Nvidia controller vs. the standard bluetooth one I was using.
There aren't many games written specifically for the new chip yet, but what is available is very impressive and a sign of many interesting things to come. The 'pack-in' game, Trine 2, looks beautiful on the display and on a 1080p television. It runs at a smooth framerate and is every bit as good as an Xbox 360 as far as its graphical capabilities are concerned.
The Reicast Dreamcast emulator runs beautifully at a nearly 60 frames per second. It almost feels as good as the original. It can deliver double the frame rate as a Tegra 4
Without question this is the ultimate gaming tablet at the moment. I am very impressed with its K1 processor's performance, especially just how much faster it is over the capable Tegra 4. We are in an exciting time for mobile development!

This is an incredible piece of hardware, although you can't necessarily tell that from its somewhat vanilla design. It's not particularly svelte either at about a third of an inch thick. But that's not the point. This baby was designed first and foremost as a gaming device, and despite earlier misgivings, it does this quite well, besides being a beast of a machine.
The screen is pretty great, with good viewing angles and a vivid display. It's not as amazing as the amoled displays on the Galaxy S series of tablets, but I'd say its comparable to the best displays next to that. Battery life is decent for general use, about 9-10 hours, but gaming eats the battery pretty fast...about 2-3 hours roughly. Maybe that will improve a bit after the battery recycles a few times. Anyway, you have three performance settings, and the good news is the Tegra K has so much raw power that it can run any current game at the lowest performance setting with ease, even those enhanced specifically for the tablet.
The sound is really pretty good, with a surprising amount of mids and even a bit of bass that you wouldn't expect from a tablet of this size. Watching movies is, for once, completely doable without headphones.
From a gaming standpoint, I think that if nVidia does this right and gets developers on board with some big name titles that take full advantage of the architecture, especially considering that it can handle the Unreal 4 engine in real time, we could see some amazing stuff. But in the meantime, the game streaming from compatible nVidia based PCs is completely awesome. And if you happen to live in the western U.S.Read more ›
