Steve Cole has just released an instant classic,
By
This review is from: NY LA (Audio CD)
Steve Cole's third CD release "NY/LA", has proven itself to be one of the years best albums. Everything from the disco inspired funk of "Everyday" and "On Broadway" to the velvety smooth "Love Letter" and "Close your Mind, Keep it Live", Steve Cole demonstrates his ability to mix smooth jazz, disco, and R&B into a delicious music set. His third album shares his second CD's influence but the formula is fresh enough to distinguish it on its own. Simply put, if you loved Steve Cole's "Between Us" album, you will love "NY/LA". If you merely liked Cole's "Between Us", you probably like his new album even more. Jazzheads, do yourself a favor and pick up "NY/LA" if you haven't already done so!

Every now and then, an artist creates something that is so beautiful and enduring that it sets a standard for others to reach. This is such an effort. Steve Cole has created a Smooth Jazz masterpiece. I am glad to see that creative musicians such as he are taking the genre to new and different places with their music. If you are a Smooth Jazz fan, NY LA should have a place of promenence in your collection. It is highly recommended!

Is this jazz??! Well if so Steve Cole is turning it around in a very interesting way. His almost disco-inspired grooves on "Off Broadway" and "NY LA" make for a session of pure musical talent and style. Also a baladeer, Steve Cole practically oozes sensuality with his slow jams "Love letter" and "Missing you". And with a guest appearance from Mauli B on "Missing You" and Aloe Blacc and Brevi on "Keep it Live", the album is rounded off with a sprinkle of R&B and rap (music which I don't generally like, but in this case a will make an exception ;)All in all, a very smooth album, with different songs to fit different moods. With innovative musicians like Steve Cole, the world of music will constantly be changing and transforming into new and, hopefully, better styles

I am not a jazz snob and this record is not a jazz snob's record... have a good listen and a good time. It's 2003 people. Somebody got a clue and mixed it all up. Steve Cole is fresh sax on the scene and the songs are fun. I love the use of the alternative vocalist. Not the usual boring smooth predictable suspects....... I think it's smart for a smooth jazz artist to go mainstream to reach out for a new demographic........it breaks the mold and keeps us young...Boney did it...and was nominated for a grammy.........you go Steve..... R&B, smooth and sexy......the entire record should be a jam on stage for sure...... thanks Steve........

I know Steve Cole is a great player but this record is such a surprise. I have been hearing "Off Broadway" on the radio and love it...It's catchy and cool. There are songs on there that are a great mix and a refreshing addition to the "smooth Jazz" world. Much more pop and soul. My thirteen year old is wearing me out with the repeat playing of "every little thing".I especially like the last tune "keep it live". I look forward to the concert if when comes to new york...definitely a fan. J

FRESH AIR,

I have been listening to Steve Cole for the past two years........I am suprised and delighted with this new release. Didn't know he had it in him. Besides being a great songwriter he has turned into a diverse entertainer.I'm tired of the same old thing in smooth jazz....this record is a breath of fresh air. Steve has "raised the bar" as far as I am concerned. Off Broadway is a hooky perfect radio tune....David Mann and Brian Culbertson are always home run hitters....and Sonic Soul has added a new dimension to this artist. I can't wait to see what Steve will do next. I'm a house DJ and plan to spin this record. Now, for the remix...... Carl mahoney New Orleans

I know that some of you jazz purists are going to denounce this CD as a desegration to jazz, but keep an open mind and just enjoy the CD for what it was meant for...good, fun jazz. There have already been some great jazz CD's come out this year, but this tops 'em all. My hat is off to Mr. Cole for an awesome CD. If you liked his other releases, you will be blown away by the pure energy of NY/LA. Cole takes a bit of dance, a bit of R&B, and a bit of soul and this is the result. I have been waiting almost impatiently for this CD to come out ever since I heard "Off Broadway", and let me tell you, it has been more than worth the wait. My favorite tracks are "NY/LA", "Everyday", "Off Broadway" and "Every Little Thing".

Wow! I just purchased Steve Cole's most recent effort NY LA, and am absolutely floored by his smooth blend of R&B and soulful, sexy jazz. This is one of those rare CDs that you can listen to without skipping any of the songs, as the grooves flow gracefully from start to finish. From the romantic, slow-burn of "Love Letter" to the uptempo "NY LA" and "Off Broadway" and "Keep It Live", this is a treat for contemporary jazz lovers.
