5.0 out of 5 stars Nice! December 23, 2010

As I write this there are no reviews listed, so I thought I'd go ahead and write one with all the experience of having completed one puzzle. If you are a fan of the NY Times crossword puzzles, you will like this. There are 30 Monday, 30 Tuesday, and 30 Wednesday puzzles. (If you do not already know this - the NYT puzzles get harder as the week progresses, starting with the easiest on Mondays).

I'm impressed with the screen and the user interface. You see the entire puzzle with all its clues, and the clue you are on is listed at the top. It is very clear. There are quite a few options that you can change including layout, font size, etc. The 5-way moves you around one block at a time with the center changing your orientation. The return moves you to the next clue. If you want to jump to a specific clue, <.> (period key) brings up a box where you can enter the number, no <alt> needed. All in all, very well thought out interface. If in doubt, press <menu> when the puzzle is up.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Lot of Fun for a Great Price December 25, 2010
Verified Purchase
I love this selection of hand-picked puzzles. I am able to switch between puzzles, with my work saved and I can come back to it anytime. What is a tremendous benefit is the "hint system" that reveals one letter of the clue, the answer of can check the puzzle for errors.

The Instructions, found by hitting the Kindle "menu" button include 8 pages of help.

You can also change the layout for the puzzles by clicking the Aa button on your Kindle. A great feature for those of us needing reading glasses. You can enlarge the puzzle size, and then to read clues, you simply move your curser to the numbered box and they appear below it. Or you can keep the puzzle smaller in the upper left.

A great price for 90 puzzles.

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, but slow January 3, 2011
Verified Purchase
This was one of my first purchases for my new Kindle 3. The layout is fantastic - you can either hide clues you have either solved, or you can cross them out. The puzzles are viewable in a couple of different layouts, depending on your preferences. It is easy to read both the clues and the puzzle itself. In all, this is a great way to spend some time on a lazy afternoon.

However, the puzzle moves a little slowly. That is, as you move the cursor, it follows slowly and there is some lag in the time it takes to pull up the next clue. I don't know whether it is the "book" that is the problem, or the Kindle, but the lag is very noticeable. It is only really a problem if you are watching your time for solving the crosswords.

That's not enough to keep me from recommending this - it really is very entertaining. But be aware of the mild annoyance of some lag while you are playing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, easy, great interface March 15, 2011

First let me qualify my opinion by revealing that I make casual games for a living on all sorts of devices (though not on Kindle yet). I really do know a good game when I see one.

I'm writing this just after completing my first puzzle, and it was *just* tricky enough to send me to Google once or twice*. Other answers I didn't know immediately - about 30% I'd estimate - were resolved in the typical crossword way with a letter here and there from other answers (the core game mechanic of crosswords, and of course the most fun). The fact that I was able to complete the puzzle was VERY satisfying.

As for the interface, a few seconds with it is all you need. It's intuitive and quick, leaving all your concentration on solving the puzzles. Some of the other crossword titles for the Kindle can't make that claim - beware of those because they're actually web pages, not apps. Their interfaces are clunky and will drive you mad, and wireless is required to use them at all. Blah.

The app saves your progress on incomplete puzzles, but I haven't started enough of them to know how many you're able to do this with at any one time. I imagine all of them though, judging by the quality of the rest of the app.

Great fun and a solid app, so if you're looking for crosswords for the Kindle, this series is it. Buy with confidence.

* Second-generation senator from Indiana? The app has letter and clue reveal options built in, as well as a puzzle checker that will show you your missed letters, but there was no way I would've gotten that one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Now I love my Kindle even more! February 16, 2011
By J. Ball
I love crosswords, but I don't want to cart around a big book of them or deal with a huge newspaper on my bus ride to work. I'm a huge fan of my Kindle for my commute (it's great to be able to read and change pages with one hand while holding tight to keep your balance when using public transportation) so I found myself wondering if there were crosswords for Kindles. When I did a google search the reviews were pretty disheartening, and the 1 and 2 star reviews given to the 'crossword for kindle' variety on Amazon didn't give me any more hope. But then I came across this gem of a puzzle book and couldn't be more pleased!

I love that the clues are displayed along the edges, but also switch according to your location in the puzzle so you can just glance at the top of the screen rather than search for your number. And it's sooo nice to be able to check for errors when you're almost done the puzzle but a couple of answers simply won't fit. You can see that where you went wrong and make corrections to complete the puzzle without having to wait for the next day's newspaper or find the answer key at the back of the book. And no more erasing or trying to reshape letters because you only had a pen in your purse!

This crossword book really uses the Kindle's features to its greatest advantage. Doing crosswords on the Kindle is such a treat!

NY Times Crossword vol. 2 for Kindle
I have this problem on my Kindle Touch with both of the NYT (vol 1 and 2) apps I've tried so far. It's very frustrating as I lose at least one partly-completed puzzle per day. I do the "go back out to Table of Contents" trick periodically in hopes of saving. Sometimes it works and... Read More

Performance on different Kindle models
I have a kindle touch and am curious if the New York Times crossword puzzles work on the touch. If anyone can suggest any other games that work well on the touch, I would be grateful.
