An oldie but consistently good
on September 29, 2013
Dennis Franz is the glue that holds this old, but not dated series together. That is not to say the rest of the cast isn't good; they're great, but Franz's portrayal of a deeply flawed policeman, who despite his flaws, remains honest and true to his profession and his fellow policemen is one of the greatest character portrayals on any TV series of any time. Leading characters came and went, and they were good actors who gave outstanding performances and we missed them when they left, mourned them, but Franz' portrayal of Sipowitz remains the best. He's the character you love, even when his political incorrectness makes you wince. He is the policeman you wanted on your side when you were seeking justice and he is the policeman you'd least want to meet if you were the perp. NYPD Blue is an ensemble show, and as previously stated, all are great, but Sipowitz, with all his flaws, and all his humanity, remains the reason this is one of the greatest TV shows ever.
