Review

"In the case of NYPD RED, there is simply too much fun --- in the form of inventive murder, sex, chemistry, investigation, more murder, more sex, and the like. Potboiler? Yes. Wonderfully told? Indeed."―bookreporter.com

The concept of the NYPD Red series had me from the jump. NYPD Red is an elite police squad tasked with protecting New York’s rich, famous and productive. Detective Zach Jordan does not run Red, but he is the biggest and most effective cog of the very shiny investigative wheel that turns only when a high-profile crime has been committed. When one considers the locale in which Red operates, it turns fairly often. The second book in this fine series --- fittingly, if somewhat unimaginatively, titled NYPD RED 2 --- shows authors James Patterson and Marshall Karp at the top of their creative games, producing an exciting story that twists, turns and shines from first page to last.

The meat of NYPD RED 2 begins with an unforgettable vignette. New York is under siege by a fiend dubbed by the media as the Hazmat Killer, due to his penchant for killing his victims and then displaying them rather publicly in Tyvek coveralls. Readers are introduced to the Hazmat Killer when his fourth victim is discovered, brutally murdered and displayed on a revolving carousel in the heart of Central Park. What makes this poor soul different is that she is Evelyn Parker-Steele, a high-influence political operator who is running the campaign of the challenger in New York’s mayoral election. As with the other victims, the Hazmat Killer has provided the police with a video of Parker-Steele confessing to a serious crime.

Given Parker-Steele’s prestige, the case is handed over to Jordan and his partner, Kylie MacDonald. Jordan and MacDonald have a history of being involved in the remote past, and while they are with others at the present time, a flicker from the torch each used to carry for the other occasionally manifests itself.

The last Alex Cross books have really disappointed me and made me wonder if Patterson is writing too much. This book, while co-authored, restored some of my love for Patterson's style and talent.

NYPD Red2 is a likable tale that seems well posed to be a summer beach read. Except that it's just now spring, so take it on a long flight and it will get you where you're going without making too many demands on your brain. The novel fits in well with the James Patterson genre, and author Marshall Karp should easily be back with another novel soon. One irritant with NYPD Red2 is the constant use of italics to jack up the action. It's as if the author feels a need to remind the reader that "Hey, this is exciting here." It does have excitement, but also some rather uncomplicated characters and a fairly straightforward plot.. It's not great literature, but it was fun reading.

Since Patterson has virtually stopped writing books and simply puts his imprimatur on the works of others (Karp in this instance) I have avoided picking up books with his name on it. However, in this instance, buying it was a good choice, The read is fast, with few lags in the action, to the point that I devoured this book in a couple of days. So, by all means buy it, even though it should say edited by JP, rather than written by.

I love James Patterson mysteries and detective novels. I read everything I can get my hands on. I think the preview should be released closer to the release date for the book. Too much time has passed and I will need to start over when the rest comes out.

For someone who has written the most thrilling novels of the last 25 years, a "shocker" like Cross My Heart was a major aberration. Compared to that hugely disappointing Alex Cross novel, NYPD Red 2 has a touch of the master's brilliance and creativity. It is vintage James Patterson at work.

NYPD Red 2 is a hugely enjoyable crime mystery. Detective Zach Jordan and his partner Kylie MacDonald of the elite task-force NYPD Red must counter the most extreme crimes. The language is sharp, the plot keeps you guessing, the action is thick and fast and the characters are truly fascinating. I can't wait to read the whole story. After all, may be it's redemption time for the author.
