Product Description

Style: 280 MM

NZXT introduces the Kraken series, the first premium all-in-one water coolers for PC enthusiasts. The Kraken X60 is a high-end 280mm water cooling solution where ease of use meets functionality. Included are two NZXT FX-140 PWM fans, with capacity to install an additional 2 more fans in a push-pull configuration for unrivaled cooling performance. At the core of the cooler is a state-of-the-art pump attached to an all copper base. Bridging the radiator and pump is an extra-long 16” tubing and premium sleeved cables, easily installed into even in the largest chassis. We developed the Kraken series to be the best closed loop water coolers on the market, our customers should not settle for anything less.

I am using the Kraken X60 with an i5 2500k, and a Cooler Master HAF XM case. Installation was a snap, I found the instructions to be perfectly simply (despite some reviews stating otherwise). If you are at all mechanically inclined, and built your own computer in the first place, then I can't see this being an issue. It has the thermal paste pre-applied even, like most EZ-mode coolers. Anyone who complains about this installation had best steer clear of actual water cooling loops, because you just aren't going to get it.

I had plenty of clearance with an Asus Sabertooth P67 motherboard to install the 2 140mm fans inside the case, on top as exhaust. I installed the radiator on top of the case and underneath the shroud. There appears to be enough room to install another pair of fans on top for a push/pull with this case, but I don't believe lack of airflow to be a bottleneck. In fact, the temp differences between the aptly named "Silent Mode" and the deafening "Extreme Mode" are only 1-2 degrees. That would be a bad thing except, the temperatures achieved in Silent Mode in the first place are quite low.

The software is ok. Without a 3-pin CPU header on my mobo, I had to plug the Kraken into a case fan header instead. It does provide logging and control of the full sRGB lighting on the waterblock/pump assembly.

All in all, I am extremely pleased. With the 2500k at 5.0 ghz and 1.45V, my idle temps (across the 4 cores) are 25-32deg C -- quite standard -- and load temps under Prime95 are ~63 on the hottest core. After some benches, I took it down to 4.8 @ 1.42V. Idle temps are the same, naturally, and load temps are ~59. So, about 20deg cooler than the Hyper 212 Evo I had installed previously.

It's still not a "real" watercooling loop, but I have to say: they are getting damn close.

I am running this product with a Intel i7-4770k Haswell Socket 1150 CPU, a notoriously hot chip, overclocked from stock 3.5 to 4.2 ghz. The NZXT Kraken X60 does a great job at cooling, my CPU runs in the 30's Celsius at all times, including under heavy load. The fan control software does an excellent job of throttling the fan speed to maintain minimal noise necessary to maintain high performance cooling.

That said: ALL of this is true ONLY because I did my research and new what I was doing before I purchased and tried to install this product, because the included instruction are confusing and inadequate at best, and potentially damaging to both the unit and the hardware it's being installed with at worst.

Here are some important installation pointers for anyone considering the Kraken X60:

1) The instruction say "Install Software Then Hardware." This is misleading, and confusing to some builders who wonder if that means they need to install a different cooler in order to run the system while installing the Software. What you actually need to is install the entire system with the exception of the USB header, then install the software, then install the USB header. If you do that you will be fine. If, however, you install the USB before installing the Software, Windows will attempt to install the USB device without the drivers and the control software will not function properly once installed which is why several users have had problem with the LEDs and fan control software not working which is a pain because without the fan control software the fans run at full speed full time which sounds like blow dryer on high. This is explained in depth during NZXT's installation video on YouTube, but not at all in the instructions.

I have previously used the Corsair H100i liquid CPU-cooler (as seems to be the norm around here) on my i7 2600k. It worked very well and kept my CPU extremely cool, even at overclocked speeds of 4.4GHz. When I purchased the Kraken x40, I was skeptical that it would be able to keep pace but I sure was wrong. I put this guy in a little micro-ATX build I have with an i5-3570k and the Kraken works wonders. The CPU idles around 29C and it never rises above mid-30s.

I don't usually like to bring up other products in my reviews because I prefer to let the product speak for itself, but having used both of the 2 big brand closed-loop CPU coolers, I think it's appropriate to do so this time, since most readers are probably deciding between Corsair and Kraken coolers.

So, how does it stack up against the H100i? Well the H100i has 2x120mm fans on top of the radiator and the x40 only has a single 140mm fan. The smaller surface area means that under full load it won't keep things quite as cool as the H100i, but that is just the nature of the game. Less surface area = less cool. As for the fans themselves, I would say NZXT fans and Corsair fans are both pretty good quality. You won't see the full benefits, say if you had Noctua fans instead, but these ones get the job done very well and I can't see a need to replace them if you don't want to.

Even if you plan on overclocking you CPU as high as 4.6 or 4.8GHz, the Kraken is more than enough to keep it in normal temps. That being said, If you are an avid cooling enthusiast who wants the coolest possible rig at all times, the Kraken x40 might not get you there; you would need a CPU cooler with 2 fans.
