Cherished Songs, is a compilation of music from two Dennis Pavao albums. Hawai'i's premier falsetto singer, Pavao also displays great range with a powerful baritone to a soaring falsetto in 16 classic numbers.

As a new student of Hula, I have been listening to lots of Hawaiian music, and learned about Dennis Pavao in his earlier recordings with Hui Ohana. In my humble opinion, Dennis is the king of Hawaiian falsetto. He sings with soul and emotion. Na Mele Nenoheno means "most cherished songs" in Hawaiian, and the songs chosen for this album are very special indeed. You won't regret buying this album.

I bought this CD several yrs ago because of how much I liked all my other Pavao CDs. Although it's "close," (his other CDs are really GREAT), I think this is his best all-round album, and the one CD of my entire collection that I'd like to have with me if I'm ever stranded on a desert island. Every track is a 'winner,' and his rendition of 'Alekoki' will bring tears to your eyes. (It does to mine, every time I listen to it.) We lost an incredible talent in Jan '02, when Dennis succumbed to a brain aneurism, at the early age of 51, as I recall. I've never heard a voice more pure than Dennis' and I am grateful that I discovered him when I did. If you love the Islands as much as I, get this album as soon as you can. You owe it to yourself to do so. Aloha and mahalo to all. MCW

One cd that has given me years of pleasure, this is a wonderful collection of Na Mele Henoheno, cherished songs, from other albums. If you want one cd to give a great representation of this man's considerable gifts, this is the one. Dennis will be missed but not forgotten, creating some of the best falsetto I've ever heard. This music is fundamental and essential to any Hawaiian collection.

I discovered this beautiful recording while vacationing on the Hawai'ian island of Kaua'i. The instruments & singing are authentic & excellent. If you want a true Hawai'ian recording, this is a great choice. Nothing cheesie here, just beautiful music.

You really can't go wrong with Dennis Pavao, and this album is no exception, as he is one of the greatest falsetto singers in Hawaiian history. I don't think it's possible to not feel calm and relaxed after listening to this album.

As for the person who gave this album 2 stars because it lacked the lyrics/translation, you should be embarrassed. Dennis' music speaks volumes, and you don't need to know exactly what he's saying to actually understand the music.

These songs have such a different vibe from what's played on the radio these days. There's a lot of folk and country influence outside of the traditional hawaiian elements. You don't hear Steel Guitar very much anymore but its used to great effect here. Most importantly, no one has a voice like Dennis anymore. Even when he doesn't sing falsetto its so smooth and emotional. I bought this CD a long time ago for Alekoki. I found that all of the tracks are pretty good and many are oustanding. I especially like his version of Kaimuki Hula which is picks up the tempo compared to the other songs. Mi Nei is another a beautiful track.

Most of these songs are sung in the Hawaiian Language so not everyone will get it. Although I don't speak Hawaiian, I feel comfortable listening to it so I have no issues.

Dennis Pavao was a true and gifted interpreter of Hawaii's haunting music. His music will keep him alive in memory forever.
