5.0 out of 5 stars The Beauty of Darkness, October 11, 2004

Abigor's first 4 albums are essential Black Metal Masterpieces. This band if truly original and may have been the most talented band in the early to mid 90's. I'm not sure why they didn't get the recognition they deserved! The folk and classical inspired acoustic guitar passages are wonderful. The guitar and drum work is just amazing to listen too. They play at an extremely high and complicated level of atmospheric BM. The blistering fast speed, keyboards and enchanting music played on this release is haunting. The vocalist has one of the best early style BM screams I've ever heard. I like his vocals just as much as Nocturnal Culto of Darkthrone. You really can't compare Abigor to any one else, but if I had to, I would say they sound like early Emperor. You have to listen to this album to understand what I'm talking about; it can't be put into words. Anyone who likes Black Metal needs to listen to this album! After the first 4 releases, the vocalist left the band and they were never the same.

5.0 out of 5 stars ATMOSPHERIC BLACK METAL, December 21, 2003

ABIGOR, definitely one of the most relevant black metal acts of the 90's worldwide. Principally for not coming from Norway or Sweden...
BUY THIS, YOU BLACK METAL HEAD!!!
This is not as Burzum-eske as their debut, but it is very essential also... A touch of female vocals and keyboards, medieval spirit music, great riffs and melodies... Best tracks are "Scars in the Landscape of God" and "Dornen".
WARNING: don't worry, you may have to hear this album for 3 or 4 times until your ears get usual to it... It's normal... YOU WILL AGREE WITH ME, IT'S A GREAT ALBUM!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars I may have a new favorite band..., June 24, 2004
This review is from: Nachthymnen (Audio CD)
Yeah, these guys are very, very, very good. This is much more symphonic than the other abigor albums, but stays brutal, while adding a little more moderate paced/less insane element. Though slower overall this dosnt make this album worse. You can still tell its abigor, their core sound is very strong. The vox are amazing, the guitars are innovative, the drums are great as always in abigor. Buy this CD!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars SOLID AND COMPETENT BLACK METAL FROM OSTEREICH!!!, February 15, 2002

Before their boring and tepid "Supreme Immortal Art," Abigor never failed to release some powerful and competent black metal. "Nachthymnen" was noted by some as an almost commercial venture by Abigor as it delved further into the realm of melody and listener accessibility than their first two releases. However, these same critics of course conceded that it was a strong release from one of the best and most respected bands in the black metal scene (at the time). Thus I would recommend "Verwustung/Invoke the Dark Age," "Orkblut - The Retaliation" or "Opus IV" over this album initially for more brutal and evil releases but this is definitely a keeper as well.

As stated before this is more melodic fare, sometimes exploring moody and melancholic emotions as opposed to pure hate. There is a still A LOT of aggression here, especially when compared to most of what passes for "black metal" today, whether it be boring Norsecore or lame and wimpy gothic influenced nonesense. There are actually female vocals on this release, but they are used quite well and only on a couple of songs. Song structures range from chaotic to flowing but are always executed with proficiency and are never boring. Abigor are one of the few bm bands that can be tight and well-produced yet still maintain what is necessary for good black metal. (Emperor failed to do this, they were MUCH better when they were actually Satanic and not worried with technicality).

Overall a strong, competent and highly enjoyable release. When I call this melodic, I do not mean to suggest that it is wimpy in any way. However, the other three Abigor albums I mentioned are preferable to this. (And if you want something REALLY brutal, sloppy and angry as HELL than get "Apokalypse", which is basically Darkthrone filtered through Abigor and a case of Satanic beer).

Recommended for almost all black metal fans and metal fans in general. Proficient and enjoyable.....

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly creative blackmetal at it's pinnacle, October 9, 2002
This review is from: Nachthymnen (Audio CD)
This is a masterwork from a band that has many masterworks under its belt. For fans of blackmetal that pushes the envelope, this is a quintiseential album to own and compare others to. The aestehtic and structure of the work is a churning void of hate and raw sonic beauty clashing and shifting organically in a chaotic fashion as one riff seems to slam into another in a pageant of dense musicianship. This is heavily layered baroque music at times, drawing on the Swedish sound of Dissection-esque bands and also heavily Norweigan at other times with buzzing pure black hate as one chord shifts almost atonally to the next. Flutes, classical guitar, and some non-annoying female vocals actually add atmosphere to the album unlike so many hollow immitators who throw folk influences in to be 'true' and 'viking' but really are just silly. This is an excellent album and is very similar to 'Opus IV,' not as raw as 'Orkblut' or thier earlier work.
