4.0 out of 5 stars If You've Already Got Move It On Over, Get This, May 23, 2004
This review is from: Nadine (Audio CD)
Better Than the Rest, which is repackaged here, was a demo Thorogood submitted to MCA Records, before he was signed to Rounder. MCA decided not to sign him, but somehow maintained control of the rights. And when Thorogood became the most popular artist, by far, in the history of Rounder, MCA tried to cash in by releasing the demo they had. Not too many people knew about the record, even those who knew about "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer," were unaware of this it seems, and I have no idea how I got my copy. But whatever, I'm glad I got it, coz it's great. The version of "You're Gonna Miss Me"--solo acoustic bottleneck--is the best version I've ever heard, anyone, anywhere. "Nadine" more than does justice to the Berry original, and both Huckle Up Baby and Howlin for My Baby are also standout tracks. This is not a perfect record--My Way is a bit pedestrian, and My Weakness doesn't stand out much either, but 80% is better than 80% if you know what I mean, and the only Thorogood record I could recommend more is Move It on Over. But if you've got that one, and are looking for more, I'd start here, then move forward recording date wise anyway to the first Rounder release. . .

5.0 out of 5 stars CD version of Better Than the Rest, August 23, 1998

This is actually George's first ablum "Better Thank the Rest" which was one of his very first releases. The album itself is quite excellent and is a fine addition to your drinking collection. Some of the included songs are on his "LIVE" CD and sound very different, but as you already know, it's all good. "Lonesome George" sounds young, but he is just as jamming as ever.

The Destroyers are one of the rockinest bands around. remembering them opening for the Stones in the early 80's. Playing to a 1/3 full collusium, they about tore the place down. Always have been one of my favorites. Good time music for your next roadhouse party. Lock the door and pour the beers, baby we are gonna break some furniture tonight!

If you only manage to buy one George Thorogood album then this has to be it. Nadine is the best track by far and since being a youngster I have always loved it.. so much so that the cassette tape I had of "Better than the Rest" has taken such a battering as I am always rewinding it but now having the remastered CD Nadine I can put it all on the IPOD and just keep on banging it out.
Anyway, back to the Album. I'm not a music critic so will keep it short and sweet.. If you want to listen to good raw Rock and Roll with the Rythmn and Blues of a drunken pub band then this is the one. It's fabulous.

I don't drive, but if I did this would be on my stereo being played very loud. It is a fantastic straight up rock n roll album. With Chuck Berry covers and more. If you like AC/DC or the Quo you will love this.
