"Nafas" was recorded in Oslo in February of 1988. Rabih Abou-Khalil relies more on rhythms then he did on his prior release "Between Dusk And Dawn". In addition, this album is much more traditional, and lacks the improvisation of the previous release. For me, this wasn't quite up to the level of his prior work, but it is still worthwhile. "Window" and "Incantation" are my two favorite tracks.

On "Nafas" the musicians are: Rabih Abou-Khalil (oud), Selim Kusur (nay, voice), Glen Velez (frame drums), and Setrak Sarkissian (darabukka).

NAFAS is Rabih's only album made on Manfred Eicher's famous ECM label (all others are recorded on ENJA). The great Lebanese oud master is joined here by Selim Kusur - nay,voice; Glen Velez (check out his ECM-made records)- frame drums; Setrak Sarkissian - darabukka. As you can conclude from the set of the instruments involved, this is perhaps the most ARABIC of Abou-Khalil's albums. NAFAS is a poem of desert, music of sands - very reflective, very meditative. And last but not least - a very good sound quality as it is with all ECM albums. Enjoy.

nafas is the sound the desert makes. this album whispers to you through drum and flute bringing you to crescendos of incredible proportion.if you want to imagine the desert buy nafas. by the way nafas means hashish in bedouin

Hey, it's Rabih Abou-Khalil, what can I say? If you like him you'll love this album, if you don't you won't, but he cannot be compared to anyone else for better or worse. He is unique, and that is a rarity in today's music world.
