5.0 out of 5 stars America Should Discover Nail, June 25, 2007

It's a sad thing that someone can be a HUGE star in another country and be completely unknown in the US. Case in point - Jimmy Nail. BIG, BIG star in Britain - hit records, award-winning television and movies, and more. This album is an overview and while all tracks aren't for everyone, it's worth the price simply for Big River with Mark Knopfler on guitar and showing Jimmy's great writing and passionate singing; as well as the hopping tongue-in-cheek Ain't No Doubt. This is a bit of a smorgasbord but is a good way to be introduced to and catch up with a GREAT artist. See him in Still Crazy and buy the sound track. Too bad this album didn't also include "The Flame Still Burns" from that fine movie. Still in all, JImmy Nail is an artist who really needs to be discovered by American audiences. I can't rate this album high enough - fun, great music, O, and Jimmy...the clarinet on Crocodile Shoes is perfect! Get it now!

Very good music, easy to listen to. I first heard and saw Jimmy Nail in the movie, Still Crazy, which is a favorite of mine and my husband. Only regret - he should have included The Flame Still Burns from the movie. Worth the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars magnificent., March 23, 2011
This review is from: Nail File: The Platinum Collection (Audio CD)
Couldn't recommend this CD highly enough. Boy...can this guy sing, and sing beautifully too. Jimmy Nail does more than justice to virtually all the songs in his wonderfully true tenor register, from the achingly poignant tribute to his dad and evocation of his Tyne boyhood in "Big River"; to the rocking energy of "Country Boy" and "Once Upon a Time". He proves he can deliver a love song with gut-wrenching honesty and true feeling in "Love"; and the final driving reggae duet of "Black and White", is as good a version of this classic as I've ever heard. Strangely, the only track where I felt he faltered was his big ballad number from Evita, "On This Night of a Thousand Stars". Lloyd Webber's lush, faux-Romantic score and Rice's cliched lyrics demand a belter of a voice for this tango-rhythmed nightclub number, in the style of a Tony Christie, PJ Proby or perhaps even Tom Jones. Nail's tenor is too light, too honest if you like, to get away with the glib, South American bravura the song demands. But the track that really blew me away, and is worth buying the CD simply for alone, is "Show Me Heaven", a troubling, complicated narrative of a tormented soldier wracked with guilt about child killing, and attempting to lose himself in sex and thoughts of suicide. A brilliant, haunting, memorable rendition of a marvellously allusive song. Go buy the CD for this track alone, and get the bonus of all the others. Well done Jimmy. You can be damned proud of this compilation, Geordie boy. Your dad would have been too.
