5.0 out of 5 stars An original and deftly written murder mystery, January 17, 2004
The Nail Knot by John Galligan is an original and deftly written murder mystery about Ned "Dog" Oglivie, a dedicated fly fisherman in Wisconsin who is unfortunate enough to find the disfigured and dead body of Jake Jacobs (Dog's fellow fly fisher and a late-coming agitator trying to save Black Earth Creek). Confronted with n entire small town of suspects, Dog's desire to leave the town is thwarted and he must solve the mystery and find the killer -- and in doing so, Dog comes to rediscover what it means to care about another human being, whether living or dead. The Nail Knot is a terrific mystery that rivets the readers rapt and total attention from beginning to end!

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved this book., April 27, 2010
This review is from: The Nail Knot (Fly Fishing Mysteries) (Paperback)
This is an engrossing, fun book. It was one of the few books I have read lately that I couldn't wait to pick up. The protagonist, if you can call him that, is Ned Ogilvie, really known throughout the book as Dog. At first this sort of tripped me up, since I initially thought it was a gimmick. But I was totally wrong. Dog's story is intriguing and wrapped into the mystery of who killed the yuppie environmentalist Jake Jacobs. Jake has settled in Black Earth with his wife, who has opened an espresso shop in a town of Maxwell House drinkers. I found the writing excellent, easy to read but not simplistic.

Cannot believe I actually read a book about fly fishing and completed it. Of course there is not much fishing in this and loads of trying to solve a mystery. The author does a good job of drawing you in after the first couple of chapters. I almost stopped reading it when I kept coming across a man named "Dog"... But I kept with it and got involved. Ended up with a good plot and some fun reading.
