5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome comback album!
Victor Griffin's style is all over this album. Very Iommi inspired, but still his own signature style. When I first heard this album I didn't really know what to think of Victor's relaxed soulful "normal" sounding voice, as opposed to Bobby (Pentagram) Leibling's strange and sometimes creepy style. After a couple listens it grew on me and now I love it. Everything about...

3.0 out of 5 stars this is a short album
i like doom music, but this album only features 8 songs and a cover. it is more of an ep. the vocal seems booming and a little bit forced. the guitars are very processed sounding, more than when victor was in pentagram. i think a more tube amp sound would compliment the music better. we will see on the next album with wino how the production fares. the song amount will be...

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome comback album!, February 1, 2003

Victor Griffin's style is all over this album. Very Iommi inspired, but still his own signature style. When I first heard this album I didn't really know what to think of Victor's relaxed soulful "normal" sounding voice, as opposed to Bobby (Pentagram) Leibling's strange and sometimes creepy style. After a couple listens it grew on me and now I love it. Everything about this album rules. The dinosaur riffs are everywhere and the songwriting is excellent. It was interesting to hear the riff and lyrics to the end of the Pentagram song "Sinister" on the song "Feeling Of Dread". The guitar tone is perfect. Not too processed at all. Very thunderous and fuzzy. Reminds me of old St. Vitus. In fact the songs themselves come close to St. Vitus and The Obsessed at times. The solos are nothing short of phenomenal. Not in a Yngwie or Satriani sort of way, they're extremely emotional and soulful. Victor can make his guitar sing like no other. The lyrics express a deep love for God and a longing for peace after death, rather than the hellfire and brimstone of Pentagram's lyrics. All in all, this is very worthy release and demands a listen from anyone into REAL heavy metal, stoner rock, doom etc... Now that Wino has joined the band on guitar, I can't wait to hear what the next album will sound like!

This is a great CD. The new one with Wino ("With Vision") is even better. I think Place of Skulls is even much better than Pentagram. The guy that said "more of a tube sound is needed" doesn't know what he is talking about. I have seen Victor's amps and they are indeed tube. I haven't heard metal this good since early Trouble.

5.0 out of 5 stars veterans do it better, July 27, 2002

victor griffin has been doing this for a long time, most notably with pentagram and deathrow, legends in the doom scene.this album has a maturity and integrity that you wont find in the newer socalled stoner rock bands.much like wino and spirit caravan the veteranship just shines through, miles above everything in playing, songwriting, very soulfull and real.buy this and spirit caravan if you miss good music and good albums.once again, better than anything by these new trendy stoner rock bands.

Chunky Sounding and that's what I like and love about bands like this I hear the comparisons to Iommi and Black Sabbath but I think they are better in many respects and miss bands like this.

Once again I like/love that deep down chunky dark & 'doomy' sound!!!

Black Sabbath only sounded like this on a few of thier songs.
