Ki-49 "Helen",
By
This review is from: Nakajima Ki-49 Donryu in Japanese Army Air Force Service: (Schiffer Military Aviation History) (Paperback)
This Japanese medium bomber was first deployed in 1941. As with most Japanese planes, it had great range, but light defensive armament. Improvements were ordered, but the plane still was relegated to transport or patrol duties. Less than 900 were made during the war.
This book has 48 pages of text, 6 pages of what unit served where and 2 pages of data. Most of the narrative covers the developmental history of the Nell, problems encountered. While heavily armed compared to other Japanese planes, it was underpowered and could not carry the bomb load as specified. 3 stars because there are no color plates showing camoflague schemes used by the Japanese, nor are there any line drawings. The B&W photos are ok, many of them showing the plane destroyed on the ground by Allied attacks. This book has one advantage - it is the only one that covers this plane specifically. For collectors and the curious, it is ok. Modelers who do their own research for color patterns may find this useful.
