I got these at Kmart using ShopYourWay rewards points, so I didn't actually pay for them per se. I have a set of Sony noise-cancelling studio headphones as well, and I think this Nakamichi set sounds better most of the time. There is some distortion when playing them at high volume, but it could be my equalizer settings in Windows Media Player. It doesn't seem as bad on my Sansa Clip mp3 player. I find that these have the best bass of any sub-$300 headphone I've tried and I can't really say that one of the Beats headphones in that price range sounds better than this. I consider myself a "casual audiophile", in that I like tweaking the settings in my equalizer for the type of music I'm listening to, but I don't own $20K in top-end rack components (people who do wouldn't be looking at these headphones anyway). These sound way better than the other Nakamichi headphones that come in all sorts of neon colors, and at least where I got them, these were only a few bucks more. The only features these are missing is a noise-cancellation feature (and perhaps more soundproofing on the earpieces to prevent from disturbing others if you're really jamming with your favorite tunes). Even the cloth-covered removable headphone wire seems well thought out. It has an in-line button and microphone to activate voice dialing on your phone, although I haven't used that feature to date. Is this the Nakamichi of 1980s glory? Not really. But do these particular headphones sound good enough for most people? Probably. Give 'em a try. :-)

I found these Nakamichi NK780 headphones at SEARS for just $16. For the price, I was not expecting much, but I was surprised at how good of a sound quality they have. Very deep bass and clear highs. They fit comfortably around the ears. What is really nice is that the chord detaches from the headphone so if the chord is damaged for some reason, you can replace it without buying new headphones. I would not buy them here for $39.99, but for $16 at Sears, it was a good deal.

This is the second time I've been surprised by a set of headphones. The first time was with the Sennheiser PX-100; those have since become cult favorites as portables. These may never becomes a classic, but for the price they are a ridiculous bargain. I actually paid $16 at the "K", and the positive reviews are right on. These have rich bass and clear highs with excellent detail... for little more than the price of a pair of basic earbuds. Plus, a dual-sided, removable, cloth-covered cord, inline pause button for smartphones and a mic too. These are unreasonably cheap.

Considering the price, I think any rating less than 5 stars better have good reason.

UPDATE 12/13: I still like these headphones and they're holding up well. Also, I see these same models EVERYWHERE under various brands and colors. They are usually with the discount gifts. Nonetheless, well worth the cheap price.

I am a big nut over headphone and earphone quality, so when I bought these I thought that they would be cheap for the price. I was surprised to find that I was wrong. The sound quality is amazing! The headphones are comfortable, but might not be for people with big ears. I love that the cord can disconnect from the headphones for easy wraping.
The cons: They ARE Plastic, and You can't use them for old-fasioned players (portable cd players, some MP3's, most cell-phones). If you do, the play/pause button won't work, and the sound wont work right, or work at all. This is all explained in the instruction manual, which you can download for free on nakamichi-usa.com.
Otherwise, this is the perfect buy for listening on a regular basis, especially for the price!

They have these at Sears and KMart. A very good deal and available in colors. Sounds great, comfortable and I like the thick nylon cord.

5/27/2013 edit:

These headphones are exceptional for the price. I would even use them for language learning. I double-checked the sound coming out of these today and I am a very picky person when it comes to sound. Tried the Car's "Door-to-Door" album and could hear the oversampling (multiply a audio track to get a "fuller" sound") and then Joe Hisaishi "Howl's Moving Castle" Promise of the World then E.G. Daily (very high voice with harmonics) "Little Toy"

And to get them in a Myriad of Colors to make anyone happy. => The amount of colors I saw is what first got me interested, then the low price. I want to say I got mine for 12 bucks on sale from ~ 20. Even at double that and more they are a great deal. Comfortable and built well also. Nakamichi even has a similar product that can answer phone calls etc.

I use this headphones for gaming and for listening to music. Overall it has a pretty decent bass sound(nice for gaming) but the medium and higher pitch sound is not good. The headphones are pretty light however one thing that annoys me is the design. It looks nice but if you wear it for an hour or so your ears starts to hurt a lot. It gets really uncomfortable and especially if you wear glasses it makes it worst. I wouldn't mind if to pay more for a better headphones. You may find it cheap, however over time you'll find that getting a comfortable headphones would be better.
