The Exotic Mystery of the East, August 4, 2011
This review is from: Naked Asia (Paperback)
This monograph by the highly respected photographer Clifford Baker was released in 2003 and is recently being updated - and for good reason. Baker selected these handsome, virile and erotic young men of Asian extraction and placed them in settings that conjure thoughts of the images of all the Asian sights and ideas that have made that astern part of the world so unique - elusive yet beyond the rest of the globe in ideas and creations. After an Introduction by the always informed and literate David Leddick the book is full of large photographs of the models Baker selected to transmit his impression of Asia. An additional addendum is the inclusion of the thoughts and writings of Yukio Mishima ( January 14, 1925-November 25, 1970), a Japanese author, poet, playwright, actor and film director, also remembered for his ritual suicide by seppuku after a failed coup d'état. Nominated three times for the Nobel Prize in Literature, Mishima was internationally famous and is considered one of the most important Japanese authors of the 20th century, whose avant-garde work displayed a blending of modern and traditional aesthetics that broke cultural boundaries, with a focus on sexuality, death, and political change.
It is the wise choice of including the impactful Mishima along with the contemporary input of Leddick to enhance the quality of this particular monograph. That is in no way to detract from the models - a very handsome group here - or the excellent quality of Baker's photography. It simply is evidence of how these photographic monographs can become compleat art books. This is one of them. Grady Harp, August 11
