Book Description

January 2, 2012
Naked Calories reveals the naked truth about what you are eating and how your lifestyle habits may unknowingly be sabotaging your health. The secret lies in micronutrients, vitamins and minerals that are being stripped from your diet and depleted by your lifestyle. On the Caltons' six-year global research expedition they discovered that modern practices such as global food distribution, factory farming, and food processing are creating foods filled with Naked Calories--calories void of any real nutritional value. The dynamic authors break it down to a simple three-step plan and teach you how to source better foods, eliminate unhealthy habits, and make choosing the best supplement as easy as ABC.

Naked Calories, this decade's Fast Food Nation, will help millions of people gain a new depth of understanding about how to maintain health in the 21st century.

The Caltons are among the world's leading experts on the topics of weight management, lifestyle medicine and micronutrient deficiency. In 2005, they set sail on a 100-country, 7-continent, 6- year global expedition, exploring the dietary and lifestyle habits of people around the world. Their research has led them to conclude that micronutrient deficiency is the most widespread and dangerous health condition of the 21st century. As a couple they bring amazing energy, personal experience, passion and knowledge to an important subject people are just beginning to buzz about--the overwhelming health benefits of a micronutrient sufficient lifestyle.

4.0 out of 5 stars Torn January 24, 2012

I found this book to be very insightful, and their research is very well carried out. However, I was disappointed to find that the entire book is based around selling the reader their new form of vitamin, though they never mention this directly. The end of the book simple directs the reader the author's website to discover what vitamins on the market may meet all the requirements they discussed in the book. The formula is, of course, distributed and sold by the authors - which leaves me desiring some third party evaluations.

I would feel better about this had they clearly stated in the beginning that their goal WAS, in fact, to introduce the reader to a "ground-breaking" new vitamin

2.0 out of 5 stars Hmm.... Have I been had? May 7, 2012

That's the feeling I am left with after reading this book.
The authors put forth a series of propositions based on numerous studies on nutrition which they frequently cite. It is educational and interesting, which is why I gave it two stars. However, their propositions eventually lead to the conclusion that to be properly nourished one must take supplements, and not just any supplements will do. No, you must take their supplements, Nutreince, which can be purchased at their website.
This book is like one long infommercial. How disappointing. Unfortunately, because they have a product to sell, the information which they put forth in this book is now doubtful: Have they just compiled alot of research to make a case to sell their supplements? It seems as if this is so, because they don't provide much information on a nutrient rich diet, nor do they go into detail on how to combine supplements (this is important because they have alot to say about how nutrients compete with each other and should be or not be combined for maximum effect).
So I'm out ten dollars for the infommercial, which I can test the validity of by spending more money on their products.
No, Thanks.

Eating fat will clog your arteries and lead to heart disease. No, no, no, it's the carbohydrates that are raising blood sugar and insulin levels causing inflammation which gives people cardiovascular problems. The great macronutrient wars show no sign of stopping anytime soon and there's plenty of reason to debate since the future of obesity and controlling chronic disease depends on a resolution. But what if there was a missing link that neither the low-fat or low-carb camps are talking about? That's what authors Jayson & Mira Calton explore in their incredible new book looking at the role of micronutrients in our diet called NAKED CALORIES: HOW MICRONUTRIENTS CAN MAXIMIZE WEIGHT LOSS, PREVENT DISEASE AND ENHANCE YOUR LIFE.

If you ask the average person on the street what a micronutrient is, they'll probably look at your cross-eyed! This rarely-discussion concept is clearly explained and outlined for the readers to learn more about why it is so vitally important and why micronutrient deficiency has come to the forefront of what truly ails us in the United States. Mira knows this first-hand as she dealt with advanced osteoporosis at the tender age of 30. She demanded to get to the bottom of this issue that she knew wouldn't be solved by taking a prescription medication.

Enter Dr. Jayson Calton who had actively worked in nutritional medicine for over a decade and was intrigued by Mira's story of declining health. He encouraged her to focus in on eating real, whole foods again as well as key supplementation strategies that would restore the lost vitamins and minerals she had been lacking in her diet. She also kicked the so-called "naked calories" to the curb for good and became deliberate in nourishing her body with high-quality foods that would eventually lead to a full healing of her osteoporosis in just two years. Now they've joined forces to help share these invaluable lessons with people who are desperately seeking answers to their health woes despite doing all the "right" things.

I LOVE this book because it focuses on food quality, nutrient density, and looking at what you eat like a savings account. What you will read within these pages is life-altering and has the potential to shift the nutritional landscape forever if physicians, nurses, dietitians and anyone working with chronically ill people will absorb the information the Caltons have outlined here. They provide all the practical tools and answer the tough questions that you may be having about what role micronutrients really play in the health equation. If you are struggling with weight loss or dealing with a quality of life health issue, then read NAKED CALORIES and ask yourself this question: "Could micronutrients be the missing link?" You'll be hard-pressed to think anything other than a resounding YES!
