I found this book to be very insightful, and their research is very well carried out. However, I was disappointed to find that the entire book is based around selling the reader their new form of vitamin, though they never mention this directly. The end of the book simple directs the reader the author's website to discover what vitamins on the market may meet all the requirements they discussed in the book. The formula is, of course, distributed and sold by the authors - which leaves me desiring some third party evaluations.

I would feel better about this had they clearly stated in the beginning that their goal WAS, in fact, to introduce the reader to a "ground-breaking" new vitamin

That's the feeling I am left with after reading this book.
The authors put forth a series of propositions based on numerous studies on nutrition which they frequently cite. It is educational and interesting, which is why I gave it two stars. However, their propositions eventually lead to the conclusion that to be properly nourished one must take supplements, and not just any supplements will do. No, you must take their supplements, Nutreince, which can be purchased at their website.
This book is like one long infommercial. How disappointing. Unfortunately, because they have a product to sell, the information which they put forth in this book is now doubtful: Have they just compiled alot of research to make a case to sell their supplements? It seems as if this is so, because they don't provide much information on a nutrient rich diet, nor do they go into detail on how to combine supplements (this is important because they have alot to say about how nutrients compete with each other and should be or not be combined for maximum effect).
So I'm out ten dollars for the infommercial, which I can test the validity of by spending more money on their products.
No, Thanks.

Eating fat will clog your arteries and lead to heart disease. No, no, no, it's the carbohydrates that are raising blood sugar and insulin levels causing inflammation which gives people cardiovascular problems. The great macronutrient wars show no sign of stopping anytime soon and there's plenty of reason to debate since the future of obesity and controlling chronic disease depends on a resolution. But what if there was a missing link that neither the low-fat or low-carb camps are talking about? That's what authors Jayson & Mira Calton explore in their incredible new book looking at the role of micronutrients in our diet called NAKED CALORIES: HOW MICRONUTRIENTS CAN MAXIMIZE WEIGHT LOSS, PREVENT DISEASE AND ENHANCE YOUR LIFE.

If you ask the average person on the street what a micronutrient is, they'll probably look at your cross-eyed! This rarely-discussion concept is clearly explained and outlined for the readers to learn more about why it is so vitally important and why micronutrient deficiency has come to the forefront of what truly ails us in the United States. Mira knows this first-hand as she dealt with advanced osteoporosis at the tender age of 30. She demanded to get to the bottom of this issue that she knew wouldn't be solved by taking a prescription medication.

Enter Dr. Jayson Calton who had actively worked in nutritional medicine for over a decade and was intrigued by Mira's story of declining health. He encouraged her to focus in on eating real, whole foods again as well as key supplementation strategies that would restore the lost vitamins and minerals she had been lacking in her diet.

Am I the only one who noticed that the Calton's cite sources throughout the book until they get to the point where they try to sell you on their patented "anti-competitive vitamins"? Did they think we wouldn't notice? Where did they get the information to create the "web of competition" chart? What makes it even more suspect is that you can't really read the mess of a chart so their is no way of double checking their claims. I'm with the other reviewer and feel hoodwinked. They build you up with decent information only to throw in a sneaky, poorly substantiated sales pitch at the end.

This book is impressive on many levels. Although the authors are experts in their field, they are able to give those of us who are not an extensive, comprehensive course in nutrition. I have always been a health nut, but I read facts in this book that were new to me--such as discovering that the things I thought would make me healthier were actually depleting vital micronutrients, and why weight loss programs are not working.
Naked Calories is not based on personal opinion or conjecture. It is extremely well documented and the research studies are fascinating. The authors spent six years traveling the world, gleaning information about health and nutrition in places most of us have never heard of. Unfortunately, our Western influence has not been a positive one. Jayson and Mira Calton practice what they preach. Mira was diagnosed with severe osteoporosis at the age of 30. Not wanting to be on medication for the rest of her life that could create problematic side effects, she sought a nutritionist who was able to turn this diagnosis around. This book is also a love story, because the nutritionist and his client fell in love and married. They now share a passion for helping people live healthier lives--and that message came through loud and clear as I read this page turner--which is not a word I generally use for a book of this nature.
If I had to describe in one sentence what impressed me most about this book, it would be that it has given me hope for a healthy life.
