Born during wartime, the central character of this true-experience novel is separated from his father in early childhood, from both parents for a time during pre-adolescence, and from the love of his life in adulthood when he himself is a soldier. Lengthy stays in three separate countries put him through wrenching experiences. Love triumphs regardless, and through it all we feel the feelings in each new situation as we live it along with him. Minor characters are interesting too.
