Big Wow! Factor,
This review is from: Naked Las Vegas (Paperback)
This is like a Cracker Jack Box with "a surprise inside." I'd heard of hirsute "landing strips" but I had no idea what was going on in the private world of low down hair styling until I saw the Greg Friedler's Naked in Las Vegas portfolio. Some people have spent a lot of time and effort on "body art" in places that don't get much of an airing. No wonder they wanted to pose for this fearless photographer. Friedler has gotten a cross section of the local populace, not just freaks and exhibitionists, so there's a wide range of realities represented here.

Not as good as the others,

This review is from: Naked Las Vegas (Paperback)
This book is in color but the premise is the same as the others. I expected more pics of regular people, but then, it is placed in Las Vegas. What interests me is how the subjects present themselves in clothes and out. Most have the same basic pose, but it is interesting to try to read the body language to get more insight into the individual. I prefer the black and white format with the subject being further away from the camera, but overall it's a good book.

Greg Freidler's series of "Naked..." is unique and the Las Vegas edition continues the pattern. We all (probably) wonder what is under other people's clothes. However, Freidler shows us more in his photos. One of the fascinating aspects of the work is that some people look like the old paper dolls: The same with or without. Other people take on whole new attitudes with just a slight change in posture or facial expression.
The straight forward portrait of each model and the similar photographic style of each subject emphasize the changes and the differences between the models. However, the pictures also leave me wanting more. (Which may be the best indicator of significant art.) Only a few of the subjects had printed interviews, which gave a fuller background and understanding of those models. I still wonder: What are the people like in daily life, how do they feel about this process, etc. I am also looking forward to the movie (apparently still in process), which will show the making of the book and fill in some of the questions left after enjoying the book.

Originally saw the documentary about the making of this book on tv, of course once seeing it - knew we had to order it.
It was pretty much what I thought it would be - especially since watching the documentary about it, so there was no real big surprises. If anything, I was more suprised that most of everyone you saw in the documentary was pretty much what ended up in the book. It's definitely entertaining, and great conversation piece - we had a party a week or so ago, and of course another friend had seen the documentary, and I had to bring the book out...friends definetly had a great time looking through the book. There were a lot of uuuhhhs & aaaaahhs!! It was great fun!!

Average Work by an Irresponsible Artist,
By
This review is from: Naked Las Vegas (Paperback)
This is a hard work to review because the idea behind it sounds good--on paper. However, I recently caught a documentary over this book on Showtime. In one early scene, Friedler explains the artistic significance of his work. Then, literally seconds later, he joins an average viewer in openly mocking the nude physical appearance of HIS OWN photography subjects! Just a couple scenes later, he joins a radio announcer in mocking yet another photography subject--and this behavior continues.
Such scenes are so disrespectful and repulsive that I had a hard time watching the rest of the movie, and an impossible time looking at this book without remembering what kind of "artist" Friedler is. Namely, he's a hack who exploits others' courage to disrobe, then lifts his pinkie finger at cocktail parties and mocks the very people on whom his career depends while simultaneously pretending that his work is meant to propagate a deeper understanding of the human condition. I am not offended by nudity or fetishism but I am offended by mean-spirited artists. Friedler simply had an average/obvious/somewhat cliche idea (get "average" people to pose nude) and that idea caught on, and he's made a career off it. But I doubt he has any concern or appreciation for his subjects. He doesn't love his own art--and that means he is not a true artist. |
