'The Naked Madonna' is an intricate mystery set against the vivid background of Renaissance Italy. It is a bewitching tale of love and lust, faith and superstition

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

A mysterious painting with the power to bring love and destruction to all who come into contact with it is the subject of this first novel by a Norwegian publishing executive. When a newly built Italian church collapses in 1989 and kills all the worshipers in attendance, including Vatican officials and the architect, a mild-mannered librarian begins to research the history of the destroyed altarpiece. He uncovers, in the process, the secrets surrounding the fourteenth-century painter, his model, and the village storyteller, who recorded the events surrounding the painting so that future generations might learn from past experience. The voices of the different characters tend to be indistinguishable from one another, leading to some confusion for all but the most vigilant reader; but generally this is a smoothly translated, enjoyable tale about the mysterious working of God and the dangerous power of art. Nancy Pearl --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

3.0 out of 5 stars Very interesting but the ending left me unsatisfied., October 30, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Naked Madonna (Harvill Panther) (Paperback)
I found the subject matter to be interesting. The author deftly handled his ideas about beauty, love and evil. The ending, however, was unsatisfactory. I thought that Wiese was leading me to an ending that would be almost thrilling. But in the end, he seemed to have left several strands hanging. Maybe, it was Wiese's way of telling us that evil is a mysterious, unknowable thing, much like love and beauty. I am not sure, except to say that I wanted and expected more.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful book..., July 12, 2006
This review is from: The Naked Madonna (Harvill Panther) (Paperback)
I was 16 years old the first time I read this book. It is the kind of book you take out of the bookshelf again and again to redescover it's beauty, and to discover something new. Just beautiful... Jan Wiese I take my hat off for you!

5.0 out of 5 stars We are all left naked, November 10, 2004
This review is from: The Naked Madonna (Harvill Panther) (Paperback)
Having had the opportunity to read the book in its original language, may be the review should have been written in the same one....

A book is good because it is possible to identify with the persons in it and acknowledge sides of one self, true sides. Not always pleasant, but thrilling, sometimes chilling. This book does it for me - I am a man. My daughter was gobsmacked - just wonder what she recognised? I don't dare to ask. We agreed, no more questions asked....

A star among the five stars.
