Editorial Reviews

Naked Raygun's much anticipated first release since the band's recent reunion will be released this upcoming Fall on Tuesday, Novemeber 6. Entitled "What Poor Gods We Do Make: The Story and Music Behind Naked Raygun," the 2-disc DVD/CD focuses on the band's history and the development of their music from "Basement Screams" to "RaygunÉ Naked Raygun" through interviews with the band and many interviews, including Steve Albini, The Lawrence Arms, 88 Fingers Louie, Jake Burns of Stiff Little Fingers, The Effigies and many more. Moreover, the film aspect also focuses on the history and influence of Chicago's independent and punk scene, even though it was often, and still, overlooked by punk historians and more recently, documentary filmmakers. The CD portion of the release will feature live highlights from their shows since Naked Raygun's reunion at Riot Fest 2006, and will include all of the songs most identified with Naked Raygun.

I grew up in Chicago, so I also grew up listening to Naked Raygun, going to their shows, etc. If you've made it this far in terms of searching out a review of this DVD, then you probably also grew up in Chicago listening to Naked Raygun. In that case, you should be very happy with this DVD/CD. It's what you think it is, and it's likely what you've been waiting for.

If you want to get really picky, there are no interviews with any former Naked Raygun members, just the final, reunited version. Also, the CD has a few duplicate tracks, and having the second version of the song doesn't really add anything in most cases.

However, these are relatively minor points. Overall, it was great to hear this music again - it does not seem dated at all. It was also great to get some insight into the band's history (distant past as well as the history behind the reunion).

The DVD also documents the Chicago music scene of that time pretty well, if not completely. Chicago is almost always overlooked, so seeing this probably worthwhile for most music fans, even if you're not too familiar with Naked Raygun.

My only regret is that I wish I would have known that they were playing again - I would have made the trip back to Chicago to see them at Riot Fest.

First of all I have lived in Chicago my whole life. People who say they always listened to Naked Raygun and saw them live usually mean they saw the reunited band which really isn't Naked Raygun at all. Which brings me to the point of this review. It focuses ninety-nine percent on the "current" Naked Raygun. Main guitarist and songwriter John Haggerty does not appear in this DVD (except for a very short old live video). I don't know whether he was asked and didn't want to participate or if they just made this without even asking him. Either way it makes calling this the 'Story of Naked Raygun' ridiculous. How can you call this the story when the guy who basically invented the Naked Raygun sound is only mentioned for maybe 30 seconds out of a 90 minute DVD. If you are a real Naked Raygun fan avoid this

Another reviewer said it right- if you grew up in Chicago and listened to Naked Raygun, this is a great addition to your collection. The band still sounds awesome, albeit they definitely look older. (Don't we all???) I do wish that they got John Hegarty to be in this performance (or at least an interview), but Bill Stephenson sounds just as good. I would definitely recommend this, the CD sounds awesome although there are some duplicates. Buy this DVD for no other reason to see Jake Burns from Stiff Little Fingers sing Suspect Device with the band.

As another reviewer pointed out, the lack of John Haggerty was a bit obvious. I wasn't too bothered by it, though. Guess I just assumed he didn't want to participate.

What I really grew tired of while watching it, though, was all the fawning over the appearance of Jake Burns. Am I the only one who was embarrassed by this? I like Stiff Little Fingers as much as the next guy but -- c'mon -- it's not like John Lennon rose from the ashes or anything.

Other than those two grievances, this film is a standard band video biography with some interesting info for fans. It's worth a watch but probably not more than once.

If you are a fan of Naked Raygun, this is a must have. it is loaded with concert footage and includes a full length CD of a concert done recently in Chicago. Being from Pittsburgh, I saw Raygun a few times and had all of the albums, but really knew nothing about the band or what happened when things fell apart. This DVD answers all the questions plus more.

If John Haggerty were acknowledged in any manner, I'd give this 5 stars. Unfortunately the animosity tries to pass off John like a fart in the wind- low class, boys, low class...
