Keep Adventure Alive, January 8, 2011
This review is from: Naked in the Stream: Isle Royale Stories (Paperback)
I just finished Vic Foerster's excellent book, Naked in the Stream-Isle Royale Stories. I received it as a Christmas present from myself, after having met Vic at a local Barnes & Noble. Vic has spent nearly 30 years adventuring Isle Royale and the surrounding Keweenaw Peninsula in Upper Michigan.
All I have to say is, "Get this book!"
I have been to Isle Royale twice guiding men through the masculine journey, using the island's trails as a metaphor for our own spiritual maturity as men, so I was very interested in this new book. Whether you are from Michigan or not, you will be amazed at this tome of adventure stories written with a warm and gentle humor not always found in first time authors.
I loved the subtle nods to spirituality, leaving the reader to focus more on the experience of Vic and his good friend and partner in adventure, Ken, rather than gratuitous spiritual overtones. It makes the book very accessible to all readers.
Isle Royale's haunting called to me as a youth. After hiking there for two summers it calls to me still. Vic Foerster's book stands to keep the beauty of the wilderness epic alive for many years to come.

Naked in the Stream: Isle Royale Stories, January 11, 2011
This review is from: Naked in the Stream: Isle Royale Stories (Paperback)
If you enjoy the outdoors and are intrigued by adventure ,you'll love this book. It is a compilation of stories set in the Keweenaw Peninsula and Isle Royale National Park in Michigan's Upper peninsula involving the author, his longtime buddy Ken and a few other characters. Each chapter provides an interesting aspect of this wilderness paradise which I found delightful. If you've been to the island before, this book will help you relive the experience and if you've never been there it may inspire you to make the journey. The book is thoughtful, humorous and sure to please. It's a great read!

A life-long affair with an island, April 21, 2010
This review is from: Naked in the Stream: Isle Royale Stories (Paperback)
For those who have never seen the rough, wild beauty of Lake Superior and her coasts, these stories will give you some idea of what it's like and why you might want to see it for yourself, though perhaps not to the depth and degree that Foerster and his buddy Ken have (you'll find out what I mean when you read the book--I don't want to spoil it for you). One thing I find gratifying about this book is that Foerster lets you in on all those little known details that make you feel like an insider. If you ever chance to overhear a conversation about the island, you'll be able to butt in with confidence. Foerster's understated humor runs like a stream through the narrative. but tears might also well up at times. He's an intelligent observer, a deep thinker, and a good companion.
As soon as you finish reading Naked in the Stream you'll want to read his next book. Be patient--he's working on it.
