Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Zakin assembles this anthology of essays as a response to current writings on the environment, in which, she says, writers "muse endlessly upon a rock and… share their uplifting reveries at interminable length." The writers in this collection, she says, have a more honest and interesting take on things. Their 31 essays, which indeed do not ramble interminably, address topics ranging from bullfighting to nude beaches and do so in an array of quirky styles. Accomplished writers selected include Zakim herself, who deals with the desert, divorce and more in "Tierra Incognito"; Edward Abbey, whose unpublished letters are annotated by Zakin; and Elizabeth Royte, who spent part of a pregnancy in the wilds of Panama. Reading through the essays proves a diverse and varied journey, during which one experiences many intriguing and bold perspectives on the natural world and our human place in it.

Product Description

Through works of fiction, narrative nonfiction, and memoir, this energetic anthology addresses issues that concern us today: genetic research, globalization, technology, urban alienation, suburban sprawl, immigration, animal rights, colonialism, wilderness preservation, and much more. Naked is no gentle ode to the natural world. With politically charged rants, outrageous personal journeys, and fiction that shocks and challenges, Naked updates the passionate environmentalism of Edward Abbey and his generation. Contributors include T. C. Boyle, Klaus Kinski, Charles Bowden, A. L. Kennedy, Bruce Chatwin, and many others. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant! Catchs you off guard ..., September 6, 2004

and then sticks the knife in. Read about the garbage, the boredom, the stepping down from the great heights and breathing the air that everyone breathes. This is the environment we all live in every day. Not the Ansel Adams, not the Grand Canyon, but the garbage in the alley, the dirty fingernails and the waiting for the bus.

This is a book that will make you excited, angry and appalled; so much so that you might actually go out and do something about it.

Highly recommended!
