5.0 out of 5 stars Good stuff for celiacs
They don't make a Gluten Free cake mix better than this one. I love this one as well as the Spice Cake mix by Namaste. We also love using their pizza crust mix and their brownie mix. All very yummy.

1.0 out of 5 stars Gritty & has an aftertaste...
I was so excited to try this cake after reading the reviews and was greatly disappointed. I followed the directions, mixing well, and the cake took longer to bake than the instructions indicated. The cake has a gritty texture and sort of a stale aftertaste. It definitely lacks rich chocolate flavor. ** A suggestion for anyone looking for an excellent gluten free chocolate...

My kids loved this mix! We made it into cupcakes and they turned out so moist and chocolately that the kids were eating them before I had a chance to frost them. It's hard to find anything gluten-free they really like, so we definitely will be buying more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Makes perfect cupcakes!, April 17, 2008

My family and friends love this mix. I make cupcakes with it for my kids so they can have a treat at their friends' birthday parties. I've also made these for my kid's birthdays to take to class, and all the children were saying they were better then their Mom's cupcakes...teeheehee! They are so moist and rich. I make a few alterations though. Instead of the whole eggs, I use 1 whole egg and 3 egg whites. My gluten eating husband and friends ask for them all the time!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Chocolate Cake Mix!, May 23, 2008
This review is from: Namaste Foods, Gluten Free Chocolate Cake Mix, 26-Ounce Bags (Pack of 6) (Grocery)
I've been searching for a really good gluten-free chocolate cake mix, and this is it! It's rich and chocolatey but not incredibly sweet. It has a lovely texture and holds together well (not really crumbly like some GF cakes).

BRAVO Namaste foods!

5.0 out of 5 stars Everyone loves my Namaste cupcakes!, June 1, 2009

I am so happy to have these cupcakes! They are moist, delicious, not too sweet and are perfect when paired with Pamela's chocolate frosting. Actually, I often have requests to bring them to parties. I agree that you do have to cook them longer than indicated on the package, but it's well worth it.

For my daughter's birthday parties I make these, with Pamela's frosting (I don't like Pamela's cakes) and I get an all ice cream cake from Baskin Robins. That way she gets her cupcakes but she also gets a cake that looks like all of the cakes she sees at other birthdays, too!

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than regular chocolate cakes, July 10, 2008
This review is from: Namaste Foods, Gluten Free Chocolate Cake Mix, 26-Ounce Bags (Pack of 6) (Grocery)
This is the best GF chocolate cake on the market. It reminds me of my Mom's scratch cake. It's even better than most wheat flour mixes or scratch recipes. Try it, you'll agree.

This was the best cake I have had since going gluten free. It was so rich and moist! the perfect chocolate cake! if anyone leaves a bad review its because they cannot bake at all and are obviously incompetent! lol. Just follow the directions! This is a great cake mix!

5.0 out of 5 stars Love This - Careful about Baking It, November 12, 2010
This review is from: Namaste Foods, Gluten Free Chocolate Cake Mix, 26-Ounce Bags (Pack of 6) (Grocery)
I was a little leery about using this mix based off the few 1 star reviews. I bought it for $5 from a natural food store to make a bundt cake for a dear friend with soy allergies. When I was mixing it up using an electric mixer, I tried some of the batter. I was also concerned as it was gritty, but crossed my fingers and didn't mix it any longer than I do other cake batters (a few minutes using a rubber spatula along the edge of the bowl to make sure it was mixed).

I was able to get enough for a Nordicware bunt cake pan and a few cupcakes. I decided to try a cupcake to make sure it was decent. The cupcake was delicious and moist with the corner edges that were slightly crunchy (something that could be avoided by a shorter cook time, but I liked it). My friend's cake was softer when I took it out (but fully cooked). When it cools down, I'll sprinkle it with powdered sugar. I can't wait to give it to her and her family! :)

It's possible the 1-star reviewers got duds for their cake mixes, but it sounds like their cakes may have overbaked. Here's a tip that may help others in the future:

Unless you are doing a box of Betty Crocker-type instant mix or maybe using lots of crisco/lard, a chocolate cake can overbake into a dry brick in minutes. Watch your chocolate cake like a hawk. I've ruined many 5-star cake recipes like that.

Start checking on your cake with a toothpick (or a skinny smooth chopstick) 5 minutes before the minimum end time. If it's not done, put it back in and check it every five minutes. It also really helps to use an oven thermometer (putting it where the cake goes after the oven is preheated) as a lot of oven have temperatures that are off.

I'm not sure why, but chocolate cakes seem to dry out faster than other cakes, and I bet it's even more so with this mix as the brown rice's texture would become way more pronounced with even a little overbaking. Hope this helps. Happy baking! :D

5.0 out of 5 stars An instant Family Favorite, January 13, 2012
This review is from: Namaste Foods, Gluten Free Chocolate Cake Mix, 26-Ounce Bags (Pack of 6) (Grocery)
I received this product through a friend and used it to celebrate my and my son's birthdays---I'm celiac, he's not. This cake is, hands down, one of the best we've ever had. My son was completely happy with it because it didn't taste like it was GF (grainy and dry). Like all GF products, it's on the expensive side---but unlike so many others, it's worth it! Excellent product!
