4.0 out of 5 stars art historical eye candy, May 2, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Namban Art of Japan (Heibonsha Survey of Japanese Art) (Hardcover)
I am a student of art history who recently wrote a research paper about the art produced by Japanese artists in contact with the Portugeuse Christians ("Namban" art), and I depended on this book for its extrordianry color reproductions. I found many hard-to-find examples reproduced in this one compact source. The text provides a general overview of the art and the history which is both informative and correct, but not excruciatingly detailed. I recommend it highly to anyone interested in Japanese art who doesn't yet know about this fascinating period of Western contact, and to any scholars looking for a strong source of reproductions.
