Namban by Rodrigo Lake, August 23, 2007
This review is from: Namban: Art in Viceregal Mexico (Hardcover)
The interface between alien cultures as produced by commercial activity may be considered old hat. But Western approaches to this field of inquiry tend to focus more on the evolution of tools and empirical knowlege, via the Northern Hemisphere to the Orient and back.
Namban reveals a lost World of art, removed in time and geography almost to the vanishing point.
This art owes its creation to wanderlust and speculation, the never-ending, interrupted journey to the East, and the shock value of success. Lake's book abounds in bizarre examples and historical hors d'oeuvres. Anyone who thinks art-history has pretty much degenerated into a chestnut collection will be delighted by the trove of novelties represented by these exotic, rare antiques!
My personal favourite is the triple decker Japanese lunch box lacquered with the Three Stooges-- actually some European life forms. Tempting to digress into sci fi associations! What an adventure!
