5.0 out of 5 stars User-Friendly Name Resource
The NAME BOOK is a well-written, user-friendly, very informative resource for the root meanings of names as well as the spiritual implications for names. This reference is a helpful tool for expectant parents as well as anyone who desires to know the meanings of over 10,000 names. I highly commend the book to people of all ages, creeds, and cultures.

3.0 out of 5 stars Lacking, February 25, 2009
This review is from: The Name Book: Over 10,000 Names - Their Meanings, Origins, and Spiritual Significance (Paperback)
This is a good naming book. It skips past the fluff about how to choose a name and dives right into a well organized list and corresponding index. Some unusual names are included, but most are simple and traditional. The origin, meaning, and spiritual connotation is given for each name and a Bible verse is included as a part of each entry. A book icon is used to indicate any name that actually appears in the Bible.

The problem with this book is that it isn't special at all and it doesn't offer anything above and beyond other naming books. The book attempts to provide insight into the spiritual significance of a given name, but fails completely. The spiritual significance, in this case, is derived from the connotation of the name's literal meaning. That means that there is not a concrete reason why a particular name comes to have a spiritual significance. It is simply how the author felt about the name. The Bible verses are always positive and sometimes beautiful, but they seem to have been chosen randomly. You can take any name in this book and replace its corresponding Bible verse with a verse found elsewhere in the book.

I would recommend this book if you are looking for a more traditional name and would like to know what it means and where it originated. Just don't expect any insight deeper than that.

The book has a great variety of names. And each name listed includes the language/cultural origin (i.e. Old Norse, American, Latin, etc), the inherent meaning, spiritual connotation and a scripture. So for example, there are 35 different ways listed in the book for the spelling of my name "Tonia". And language/cultural origin for my name is Russian. The inherent meaning is "Queen" and the spiritual connotation is "honorable". My name scripture is 1 Corinthians 3:16 NRSV Do you know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you!

I don't have any kids yet, nor am I even expecting yet. Nevertheless, I wanted to get a head start on some name possibilities. It's a great reference book, for future names and already-existing names. Definitely recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this book!, November 4, 2011
This review is from: The Name Book: Over 10,000 Names - Their Meanings, Origins, and Spiritual Significance (Paperback)
I LOVE this book. Some of the names are a bit out there for my taste, but overall this book has a great selection of names. I love the way they break down the name -Language/Cultural Origin, Inherent Meaning, Spiritual Connotation and Scripture verse - for each name. I would definitely recommend it to others!

Tossed this book in the trash, very limited compared to other compilations of this kind. My biggest problem, studying the origins and definitions of names has been a hobby for me for over 50 years. Where they got their information on the definitions is beyond me for many of the names in this book.
I can tell you that the "origin" and "definition" of my own name is this book are both incorrect.
