5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, unique names
After searching three other baby name books (that each boasted 20,000 names or more - one even had more than 50,000 from around the world) and finding nothing that worked for our first child, I borrowed this book from a friend and found the perfect name. 3.0 out of 5 stars Hmmm...
This book has literally thousands of names- but the only problem I had with it was that it didn't go very deep into each name. what you got was a section like this- Name- Meaning- spiritual meaning- scripture- this is all that you got for each name. But the scripture bit was nice, something for you name especally. It had many spellings. what you need to know is that you...

This review is from: The Name Book: Over 10,000 Names, Their Meanings, Origins, and Spritual Significance (Paperback)
After searching three other baby name books (that each boasted 20,000 names or more - one even had more than 50,000 from around the world) and finding nothing that worked for our first child, I borrowed this book from a friend and found the perfect name. The name my husband and I chose wasn't in any of the other books. The same thing happened to the friend who lent me The Name Book - she has never found her first-born's name in another baby name book.

The meanings in The Name Book are lovely, and the spelling variations allow parents to personalize names to their own tastes. Even though we knew the sex of our baby before she was born, it was still nice to have the boy and girl (and unisex) names listed together - it just gives you more options and it's easier to read.

I'm ordering my own copy of the book since we're expecting our second child this year. (By the way, my lending friend is done having children - but she's keeping the book just because it's so wonderful!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Research Resource, October 18, 2002
This review is from: The Name Book: Over 10,000 Names, Their Meanings, Origins, and Spritual Significance (Paperback)
This book is an excellent research resource for the serious student seeking to learn the Father's symbolic language to us in regard to dreams & visions. This is not a regular run-of-the-mill book of baby names to choose from (although it provides an excellent resource for that as well). It is brief, concise & to the point with the language/cultural origin, inherent meaning, spiritual connotation & Scripture reference - & precisely because of this form, it is able to list so many names (over 10,000). It is an absolutely invaluable & wonderful research tool. Many, many, many thanks to the authors/compilers!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Handy Reference, December 16, 2003

This review is from: The Name Book: Over 10,000 Names, Their Meanings, Origins, and Spritual Significance (Paperback)
I use this incredible book when creating custom "Personalized Acrostic Name Blessings" as gifts for just about every occassion, and also in ministry, through my publishing company, Chalfont House. I love that a theme verse is suggested to mesh with the meaning of the name. Or, if the meaning of the name is less than wonderful, an alternate "spiritual connotation" is suggested too. This allows me to help people feel better about their name. For example, I can change "Mary" which literally means "Bitterness" into "Blessed". I like the listing of alternate name spellings, and that the names are all alphabetical instead of by gender. This is a great resource!

5.0 out of 5 stars Name Book, September 17, 2005

This review is from: The Name Book: Over 10,000 Names, Their Meanings, Origins, and Spritual Significance (Paperback)
This book is comprehensive in its information, but does not try to be the same as other books with information about proper names. I appreciate the genderless organization, just alphabetical listings, with alternate spellings and nick-names included. Each name has the origin, although I found a few of them to be different from the expected and usual. The meanings and scripture associated with the names are the driving reason for my purchase of this book. I plan to use it as a teaching tool with my students, encouraging them with the meaning and scriptures for their names.

Thanks loads.

My husband and I find this book very helpful. It is in alphabetical order so it makes looking up a name easy.It also includes everything mentioned like all of the meanings and where the names comes from. It is a great tool other than the internet. Even though we are still looking for a name I am sure we wont have a problem finding one in this book.

I use this book as a reference often. I have purchased it for friends having babies, but it is broader than that. If you are a dreamer, there may be hidden meaning in a name. If you are into people and like to understand them better, this may be helpful. Not only does it give the meaning of the name, but also the renewed meaning with promise.

The Name Book lists many new and old names. I was surprised to see my name as well as my daughter's name in there as our names are somewhat unique. I was very pleased with this book and you will be too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hard to find name meaning book like this, November 6, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Name Book: Over 10,000 Names, Their Meanings, Origins, and Spritual Significance (Paperback)
I ordered this book after looking at a copy my friend had. I just love the meanings of names & especially ones that involve spiritual connotation & a scripture. This book is great. Though it does not have every name known it has a lot. Since my son's name was not in it, I found a few others that were close & then picked the one I thought suited him the best.
