This review is from: For Name and Fame: Or Through Afghan Passes (Kindle Edition)
The first half of the book is pretty boring; a juvenile adventure story, both predictable and un-exceptional, and has nothing to do with Afghanistan. It is not until the second half that the story takes up the matter suggested in the title -- the British invasion of Afghanistan in the 1880's. The adventures of our hero now assume an almost extraneous importance, as the story becomes more of a factual account, or narration, of the military operations and engagements of the British expeditions inside Afghanistan. These descriptions, written almost like a historical report, are indeed fascinating and educational, from a strictly military standpoint. And I imagine they would have a particularly pertinent value to anyone involved in our own nation's ongoing efforts against the Taliban in Afghanistan. For these reasons, I found this book to be indeed worthwhile, and recommend it. |
