Samantha goes to visit her aunt Thea and Thea's husband who is a poet that samantha admires.Samantha is expecting a fun trip but Augustus is less than likeable and when the guests arrive to the weekend party and Augustus tells them that he has written a book that describes each of their mistakes from the past everyone gets anxious to find the manuscript so they will have their past stories removed from that horrible book! Will Samantha be able to find the manuscript to help her to find out who killed Augustus? This book was a real page turner and kept me on the edge of my seat.

Sam You're Awesome!,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Name of the Game Was Murder (Paperback)
"If you don't take part, you'll soon regret it," reads the invitation sent out to a group of celebrities. Samantha's uncle, Augustus Trevor, has sent these invitations, and it just so happens to be on the weekend Sam stops by.
Sam is a sweet yet curious fifteen-year-old girl who wants to become an author, but first wants the opinion of her famous novelist uncle so she knows that she can continue with this career. She also wants to visit her sweet Aunt Thea. Her uncle is furious that she had to come but has no choice but to let her stay because her parents are on a trip. Soon, the game starts and Augustus tells his guests that their deepest darkest secrets will be revealed in his new book (already typed) if they do not figure out the clues that he will be giving them. Then suddenly, Augustus Trevor gets murdered, and the murderer is still in the castle on the island. The guests and Sam can't call the police because there is a horrible storm going on that will last for another week. The guests and Sam must find out the clues that lead to the manuscript in order to destroy it before the police find it the day they come to investigate. Soon enough, Sam is pulled into the game and has to help the guests and Aunt Thea solve the clues together. Will Sam solve the clues in the end? How will Sam and her Aunt Thea find the manuscript and read it to find out who murdered Augustus? Will the murderer get away with it? I enjoyed The Name of the Game Was Murder because there was always something interesting happening and it was very suspenseful. I recommend this book to anyone who likes suspenseful books that will keep you guessing until the end. P. Des Plaines, Illinois

This review is from: The Name of the Game Was Murder (Paperback)
In this book a young lady goes to her ant and uncles house. She is going there because her uncle is a famous writer and she wants her advise on her short stories. After she gets there she learns that he is having guests at the house that weekend, and they have to figure out where he has put a manuscript. In this manuscript he has something about every one of the people staying in the house that weekend except Sam because he didn't know that she was going to be there. Who ever found out where the manuscript was would have all the information taken out of the manuscript before it was published. While everyone was looking for the manuscript, putting the clues that they had been given and everything, Augustus Trevor was murdered. They were supposed to be working together but she devised a clue that would get all the other players in the wine cellar. In the end Sam figures out where the manuscript is and who murdered Augustus Trevor. I thought this book was ok. It isn't the best book I have ever read but it made you keep reading and never put the book down, and it made you wonder what was going to happen next. I give this book three (3) out of five (5) stars!

A Breathtaking Book,
By A. Shen (Cerritos, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Name of the Game Was Murder (Paperback)
The Name of the Game Was Murder by the 4-time winner of Edgar Allan Poe contest, Joan Lowery Nixon, is about a young girl named Samantha that wants to be a writer. She is visiting her Aunt Thea in an isolated location. Samantha goes there to get writing suggestions from her Uncle Augustus Trevor, a well-known writer. She thinks that Augustus is very gentle and nice, but he is nothing more than a grouch. Augustus has invited many famous people to his house for the weekend; they couldn¡¦t refuse because the letter they all received was a threat letter. It says, ¡§ If you don't participate, you'll be sorry." He has written a ¡§gossip¡¨ manuscript about everyone- things that could change their whole lives completely. He even wrote something about his own wife. The object of the game is to see that whoever solves the clues first and finds the manuscript can get their information removed from it. Augustus Trevor is killed in his study room. Samantha thinks it will be a good idea to work together to find out where the manuscript is before the police get there. Where is the manuscript?I liked this book because it had an affect that made the hairs on my neck stand up. New clues unravel while old clues still float around unsolved. The Name of the Game Was Murder made me toss and turn all night while sleeping because it was so scary. It is a breathtaking book that makes you sit at the edge of your seat. When Samantha notices strange clues step by step it just makes me want to read faster. ¡§Why was she still in her work clothes? Where has she been?¡¨ A clue that Samantha wrote to derive the rest of the players to the wine cellar-everyone but Aunt Thea was "one left, 13 down." That was like a crossword puzzle. This book had very clever clues. It confuses and messes your thinking up. You can never let go of this book. My favorite part of this book was when Samantha read the manuscript. It revealed many hidden secrets about the players. This story proves that no one in this world is perfect. We all make mistakes. It was very shocking to find out that Aunt Thea killed someone on vacation. Overall, this book was wonderful.

The Name of the Game Was Murder,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Name of the Game Was Murder (Paperback)
The name of the Game was Murder by Joan Lowery Nixon is an exciting mystery book. The main character Samantha Burns visits her Aunt Thea and her uncle, famous novelist Augustus Trevor, on Catalina Island. Samantha always wanted to become a writer and wrote a number of books. She brings her books on vacation and wants Augustus Trevor to read them to tell her if her writing is good enough to become a writer.
As the story goes on Augustus Trevor blackmails a group of celebrities to Catalina Island to participate in a game; a murder mystery. The game turns out to be a real mystery, one that leads to Augustus Trevor's murder. Now everyone is putting together all of the clues to find out exactly who murdered Augustus Trevor. This book wasn't one of the best books I have read, but I did like it. I liked the plot of the story, but I did not like how the story progressed. It felt like things were being missed. If they made this book a bit more detailed it would help people understand the story better. |
