These are exquisite recordings of Haydn's most popular symphonies. These are not the lush swirling versions you hear played by modern orchestras. These interpretations are crisp, spare and authentic, as if you had journeyed back in time to hear them played for the first time in the imperial courts of the era.

Haydn's output was astonishing. Yet one should not assume musical redundancy, as can be the case with other prolific composers. Haydn does not share Vivaldi's tendency to crank out a lot of stuff that sounds the same. Each of Hadyn's symphonic works is original, deliberate, and composed with care. And each performance here is conducted with equal care. Adam Fischer and the Austro-Hungarian Haydn Orchestra are at one with this music and flawlessly execute the composer's intent.

The performances in this box set would be worth three times what I paid for it, which was less than $50 at the time. Having 31 symphonies spread across 11 CDs for that price makes this set an incomparable value. Do the math! Lovers of classical music rarely find this kind of bargain.

Ah Haydn, you and your 100 some symphonies...okay so in the early days of music, the composer had an easier job. Borrowing ideas was considered okay, even from yourself, and what you wrote for Vienna...you could write for London and no one had to know it was about the same. Later composers could never produce 100 symphonies because the basics of filling out a silent world had been done. Beethoven only got to 9, though his were more ambitious. Point is, you do not need every Haydn symphony. Nor should you want them all. A good idea would be to get his better ones, which conveniently were named if people liked them a bit, and hey, here they all are on 11 fine CDs that take up little shelf space, in excellent sound quality and good performances. I filled out my Haydn collection with a CD of concertos including his great trumpet in E you've heard even if you don't know it by name, and a few other CDs from the London years (his late period), and a small 4 CD set of the highlights of the string quartets. Haydn wrote the worst piano music I've ever heard by anyone sober and with access to a tuned instrument, so skip all that. Its just thin and basic. And really the orchestra in his era was mostly a large string ensemble with a bit of woodwind. Percussion was never utilized well to my knowledge and opinion before Beethoven, who did hold up Haydn as his idol though. Bach he was dubious of. Haydn wrote vigorous, often very fast music, high on virtuosity, and mostly with undeveloped themes. I do not think of anything in particular listening to his music, though he is magical to work to- typing, cooking, writing, painting. He was the favorite background of Wyatt Gwynn in my favorite novel "The Recognitions". If you want a challenge...Read more ›
