If you or your family have ever lived in Montana, this is a wonderful reference book. Have you ever wondered how some particular Montana town got its name? That's what Cheney's book will tell you. Every Montana city or town that ever had a postoffice is listed, and so are some that didn't. Many of these towns are completely gone-- only the names and a few fading family memories remain. In other cases, a single sturdy brick building sits in a field. And of course, the biggest towns in Montana, like Billings, Missoula, Great Falls and Butte, are listed too.
Unless you're the sort of person who reads dictionaries for fun, you won't want to read this all the way through. You might, however, want to dip into it over and over again. And you might want to make sure that your local library owns a copy, so you and others can do just that.

Years ago I met the author and visited with her and family about the research herein. This is an outstanding book, and as a Realtor I give it to many clients just moving into the state. This is Montana's best get acquainted book. I'm Bob Kern, 81 yrs old and a 3rd generation Montana native and feel this IS THE BOOK for those wanting to know about Montana.

Great little book. Gives one some interesting information on the beginnings of the state of Montana. I read parts of it to some elderly Montana women at their high tea and they loved it. We looked up a lot of towns that no longer exist and that brought up great and interesting stories from all of them!

I was disappointed that it didn't have some of the small towns that were mainly a dance hall and a few families. I was looking forward to finding why Cushman was called that.
