5.0 out of 5 stars Letting the Character and Person of God Interpret the Bible
Here is a great book for people just beginning to delve into the realms of God's nature and character and work. This book deals with some of the main names/titles of God as found in the Old Testament. God's names and titles are each a sermon in themselves. So often, people define God by first defining who they think, or want, man to be. Nathan Stone turns that around...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not great
I was really hoping this would be a great book, unfolding some of the deep mysteries about the Lord's revelation of who He is. (I was surprised at how tiny the book actually is.) It is a good read, but falls a little short of my expectations.

Here is a great book for people just beginning to delve into the realms of God's nature and character and work. This book deals with some of the main names/titles of God as found in the Old Testament. God's names and titles are each a sermon in themselves. So often, people define God by first defining who they think, or want, man to be. Nathan Stone turns that around very simply by showing that God is the "mold" into which all other views must fit. God is who He is. We cannot change who God is just to make room for what we want man to be or to make the Bible say what we want it to say. The foundation of Bible interpretation is revelation of the Person of God. That must be determined first before any other doctrinal study can be studied Biblically and accurately. Get a copy of this book and start learning who God is; and accept what God reveals Himself to be, whether you like it or not, because God isn't going to change for us. Then rethink all your doctrinal beliefs in light of your new Biblical understanding of God. Nathan Stone, with this book, will get you well on your way.

This book presents a concise and detailed explanantion of the many names of God as they are used in the Bible. Readers will find it to be spiritually and academically satisfying. There are excellent references to Bible scriptures. This book would be a welcome edition to your Bible reference library.

5.0 out of 5 stars really good book., February 5, 2008

This review is from: Names Of God (Names of... Series) (Mass Market Paperback)
This book was recommended by our minister during a Bible Study class. I bought it from Amazon, and received it promptly. Good transaction.
Anyway, this book describes in detail the meanings and nuances of the other names that are translated in the Bible as 'God' or 'Lord'. Each word in the original Hebrew or Greek describes the very nature of GOD, ie, His personality.
PS. There is a doctrine that is referred to in this book that is taught and taken for granted by most (ie, Catholic and Protestant churches), but that does not fit in with the doctrines of the Church of God that are written of throughout the NT, and especially the book of Acts. The book of Acts describes the very beginnings of the Church right after Christ died. Nevertheless, all in all, besides sounding somewhat pious at times, this book is very good. It is of benefit especially to those who really want to get to know God, ie, Who He really is and His relationship with human beings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it!!, March 20, 2007
This review is from: Names Of God (Names of... Series) (Mass Market Paperback)
This is a great book. God really taught me a lot through reading it. You really get a good sense of how the order in which the names of God were revealed is so important, as well as the historic events that acompanied each revelation. This book gave me a much better education in the names of God than I have ever recieved in a sermon or anything else. I hope you enjoy it too!

5.0 out of 5 stars Names Reveal Who God Is, February 13, 2011
This little book is from the Moody Classics series and is one of the best I've read about the Biblical names of God. I enjoy studying the names of God because they reveal who He is and what He says about himself. Twelve names are covered in this book, each presented with a detailed account of what the name means, the context in which it appears in scripture, and thoughtful insights about how those names are still relevant to us today.

I like how the author draws the connection between the name or title of God and the part of His character it represents. One of my favorite names is Jehovah-Jireh which means God provides, but as the author points out, the word "jireh" also means to see or foresee so God as provider means He not only has provided in the past, He will provide now, and we can foresee that He will provide in the future.

There are other books that have more extensive lists of the many names of God but this is the one that takes the main ones and gives the reader an in-depth look into the richness of each of them.

Mr. Stone has a sincere respect for God and His personal/descriptive Names in the OT and NT. Since it was written in 1944, much new manuscript information has come to light. For example, the personal Name of God has been found to be Yahweh by most Christian scholars. Jehovah has been determined to be incorrect, being formed by adding the Vowel points of Adonai to the Tetragrammaton, YHWH. This was done to keep from offending the traditionalist Jews who thought it too sacred to pronounce, and even the newest Bible translations use LORD in place of the personal Name of God, YHWH (Yahweh). Since LORD is a title, and not a name, I believe that we should use our God's real personal Name Yahweh in our translations and in our prayers.

I have referred to Nathan Stone's Names of God countless times across the years to enrich my Bible study and my understanding of the ways in which God interacts with mankind. Learning the Hebrew names and their connotations will open up Old Testament Scriptures that may seem difficult otherwise. Stone even offers clues to the source of the Christian concept of the Trinity. This is a book to read slowly and ponder over and over again.
