Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3-"After school, when I want to be at softball practice, I have to sit down at the piano instead." The fact that the narrator's music teacher is grouchy and critical doesn't help, and his mother won't let him quit his lessons. What helps is Nana Hannah next door: her tango lessons, her twisted ankle, and, most importantly, her relaxed, no-pressure attitude. By the end of the story, the boy has blossomed naturally into a player-of both baseball and piano-and actually enjoys both. While not universally as appealing as Bottner's Bootsie Barker Bites (Putnam, 1992, which was helped by Peggy Rathmann's superlative artwork), this fresh story is nicely told and delivers its message without a lot of preaching. Bluthenthal has a light comic touch, a controlled graceful line, and a clear eye for color. Her nana looks like a cross between Olive Oyl and a Hilary Knight character. While the look of this book is a little young for kids old enough to have a problem like this, it is nevertheless an amusing take on a fairly common predicament.

From Booklist

Ages 4^-8. When baseball is a boy's greatest passion, having to take piano lessons is about as appealing as tango dancing. The one person who understands how the little boy feels is his grandmother Hannah, who loves to dance the tango and expresses joy in whatever she does. She tells him, "You'll be great at whatever you do. Like I am. You should see me dance." When she twists her ankle and needs cheering up, the boy moves in for a week. He teaches her how to catch a fly ball; she plays the piano, which inspires the boy to learn a song and discover that maybe there is more to life than baseball. The book's colorful illustrations are subtly crafted, simple but expressive. On a deeper level, the delightful text suggests that children--boys, especially--need their artistic sides affirmed. A fine book for lap sharing. Shelley Townsend-Hudson

More About the Author

Barbara Bottner began writing for children in the 1970's, when she broke her leg doing off-Broadway Theater and decided to consider a different career. Having gotten a degree in painting, she began to hang out in the children's book section of libraries and bookstores. She was amazed at the originality of the art and fell in love with picture books. Slightly fickle, she also wrote I Can Reads, eventually middle grade and YA novels. She stretched out into writing for television and film and also published essays and short stories in national magazines. She returned to writing books for children and Bootsie Barker Bites, illustrated by Peggy Rathmann, a classic, was translated into eight languages and animated for television. Barbara prevailed upon her MD husband, Gerald Kruglik, to co-write Wallace's Lists, illustrated by Olof Landstrom, which was also animated, (Weston Woods) is translated into Swedish and is forthcoming in French.
Barbara collaborated with Michael Emberley, resulting in Miss Brooks Loves Books (and I don't). Anyone who's ever struggled with falling in love with reading, or is the parent or teacher of a picky reader will rejoice in the way Miss Brooks handles a curmudgeon of a first grader. Miss Brooks Loves Books has appeared on the New York Times Bestseller List and is nominated for the prestigious Bill Martin Jr. Award. Barbara teaches writing and consults with writers all over the country; she was honored to receive the New School Distinguished Teaching Award in 1990.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sweet Story, June 1, 2007
This review is from: Nana Hannah's Piano (Hardcover)
Nana Hannah sprains an ankle and her grandson comes to stay. He's a ball player, and hates the piano, and does not like his teacher. He has so much fun with Nana Hannah that playing piano is a breeze and becomes fun. Sometimes to learn we just have to enjoy what we're doing!

This review is from: Nana Hannah's Piano (Hardcover)
As a piano teacher, I'm always interested in picture books that feature children playing the piano...I do think that this is a book worth reading to your kids. No, the example of the negative teacher at the beginning isn't good, and the parents ARE absent, but I don't think the author took on the challenge of telling us this boy's whole life story.

The book is about a young boy who has a bad experience with a piano teacher and then is motivated and inspired to play the piano by his "Nana Hannah". At the beginning, the boy wants to play baseball instead of piano. By the end of the book, he comes to understand that he can do both. The boy and his grandmother have a good relationship and enjoy sports and dancing AND piano together.

I loved reading this book which is an example of a boy who plays sports who also plays piano! I have 16 sports-minded boys in my own piano studio.

Happy reading!

5.0 out of 5 stars Love that Nana!, November 21, 2001
This review is from: Nana Hannah's Piano (Hardcover)
"Nana Hannah's Piano" is a children's book that combines a story by Barbara Bottner with illustrations by Diana Cain Bluthenthal. The narrator of the story is a young boy who would rather play baseball than take the piano lessons that his mom insists he attend. But he warms up to the piano at the house of his grandmother, Nana Hannah. He spends time with the tango-loving Nana while she recovers from a twisted ankle, and the two watch the World Series together.

This book is a really wonderful story of grandmother-grandson bonding. I have had very special relationships with both my wonderful grandmothers, so I could really relate to the story. Bluthenthal's illustrations have a fun, cartoony quality to them, and are bursting with bright colors, friendly energy, and nice details (such as the cats always lounging around Nana's house). Nana is a great character. Highly recommended.
