If I had to pick a desert island album, it would certainly include this. It opens with Nancarrow's quartet. If you happen to be someone who appreciates Charles Ives' music, you'll like it but you must be receptive to his ideas and have an open mind. Ligeti was a great admirer of Narcarrow, the ambiguity of the English language expressing more than one truth here. Ligeti's fascination with Nancarrow is fascinating and I would never have listened to Nancarrow without his endorsement. It is very good music and Ligeti was as usual further ahead of the curve in being an early proponent of Nancarrow's very expressive dreamy almost hallucinogenic music. If hostile aliens from outerspace gave us the choice between the destruction of Mount Rushmore or the second string quartet of Ligeti and I were casting the deciding vote, I'd make the good patriotic decision to choose Ligeti though I wouldn't fill the Grand Canyon to save his master piece. More doesn't need to be said here, most of us buy this recording to hear Ligeti. Dutilleux, who passed away recently, leaves us a string quartet of incomparable beauty. Dutilleux has not received anywhere near the attention he deserves. His quartet uses a very advanced musical language and simply cannot be described as 'romantic' or 'impressionistic' look back on Ravel which is the common complaint about his music, as though music exists only for tenured professionals to look for things to complain about... Turning a deaf ear or a blind eye rather to his mindless critics let me say in all sincerity that this is about as close to 'perfect' music as anyone can get. If you can get a hold of the score while following the music it helps you follow the fine details that can easily escape the ear. This quartet owes much to composer like Webern and Bartok, and less to Ravel but in all fairness, this is the voice of Henri Dutilleux, a composer like no other.
