Editorial Reviews

Review

"In his Preface, family friend Ismail I. Nawwab, former Saudi Aramco general manager of Public Affairs, says Nance's entire pre-retirement life in Arabia can be looked at as a preparation for founding the museum. Noteworthy are the range of his reading, interests, successful company executive roles, student of world cultures and museology, and a discriminating collector of arts and artifacts. All these traits, as well as the experiences Nance gained as planning coordinator for the new Saudi Aramco Exhibit, while he was in Dhahran, have contributed to the professionalism, creativity, cultural understanding and enthusiasm he has brought to the museum as its curator." -- The Arabian Sun, September 1, 1999, Saudi Arabian Oil Company, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia

After having had the privilege of seeing the Nance accomplishments in Saudi Arabia and at the Nance Museum in Missouri, it was not a surprise to me that this book is indeed a unique and truly superb work. -- Dan MacMaster, President Emeritus of the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry

As has often been said, the only thing longer than a shadow that one can leave behind is an institution which endures and enlightens others. Paul Nance has helped build just such an institution--a lasting monument to intercultural understanding. Read this book to learn about Saudi Arabia's extraordinarily rich culture and heritage. Read it to appreciate the fascinating story behind the visionary creation of a one-of-a-kind museum for learning about Arabs and Muslims through art and artifacts. Read it to know why Nance is many people's hero. -- John Duke Anthony, President and CEO, National Coucil on U.S.-Arab Relations

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book on Middle Eastern Culture, August 20, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Nance Museum: A Journey Into Traditional Saudi Arabia (Hardcover)
This book, written by Paul J. Nance, is one of the best reference books I have ever seen. I recently purchased the book and I find its contents and full color pictures very exciting. Whether you plan on traveling to the Middle East, or if you just want to learn about the culture, this is the book to read.

This book has several first rate accounts of Paul J. Nance's thirty two years in the Middle East. He worked for Aramco Oil Company in Saudi Arabia during this time and he acquired quite a bit of knowledge. Since his return to America he has started a collection of Middle Eastern artifacts and art. The book details many of the artifacts in his Museum, and is extremely helpful in learning about Middle Eastern culture.

This book can change the way you look at the Islamic religion. Before I looked at the book and visited the Museum of Mr. Nance I knew very little about the Arabian Penninsula.
