I have been looking for a book like this for a long time. Being a marathon runner is a specific sport, and Nancy does a great job of really laying out what you need to do to fuel yourself to be the best runner you can be. Sound advice, great suggestions, and even some delicious recipes.

A Great Book for Runners of All Abilities,
By A Customer
This review is from: Nancy Clark's Food Guide for Marathoners (Paperback)
Nancy Clark has clearly written a book that will direct runners on the best way to set up your nutrition plan. I first read her article in Runners World Magazine in December 2002. It lead me to this book, and as a result I lost 13 pounds while training for a marathon. It is a common sense approach to eating for life. No protein overload! This is a must read for all runners!

Food Guide For Marathoners,

I found this book to be fine as just a food guide, but I got more out of John Hanc's Marathon book, which had a chapter or two on fueling for running. Much of what is in this book is either common knowledge or self-evident. In my opinion, you will get more out of a book on running marathons or any running magazine.

Good resource for marathoners or endurance athletes,

I'm a fairly new marathoner, so I cannot speak for those that already have a collection of books on nutrition for endurance athletes. What I can say is that for a novice to intermediate marathoner who is interested in figuring out the correct way to eat to gain or lose weight during training, this is an excellent resource.
I was mostly looking for solutions of what to eat before, during and after a long run, as well as some helpful tips on how many calories I should be eating and how much of those calories should be carbs, fat and protein. This book answered all of my questions. There is a chapter pretty much devoted to each one of these topics, and each topic is visited with just enough detail for someone like myself. Nancy supplements with recipes and other food ideas, and generally gives a lot of helpful tips. The downside of the book is that I do think it needs a slight update, as the food pyramid and other government recommendations have changed recently. I definitely recommend this book to any marathoner interested in figuring out their nutritional needs. I have found it very useful in my own training.

If you are starting to run or walk for sport events, this is for you. More advanced athlets might find it a little simple.

If you are training for a marathon and are wondering what foods to eat, get this book. Full of helpful tips and recipes. This book was great at helping me decide my pre-race meal as well as pre-long run meals. Finished my marathon in 3 hours and 42 mins!

I always love Nancy Clark. She is easy to read and follow. Instead of getting into the technicallities she sticks with practical general advice. This is a great book for those training for their first marathon or unsure how to eat through training and race day.

Recent experience has shown me, work hard with no nourishment means big time problems. OK, but how should I replenish and renourish? This book outlines the recipe in very simple and real terms. A must for folks trying to push the envelope.

*yawn*,

Absolutely nothing new here. And some points that made my eyebrows go up, to say the least. Also, my copy had editorial problems in the Vitamins and Supplements section. I've written to the editor to see if he'll send me a complete copy (I had paragraphs of text just missing).
But in terms of content, it was just old and tired and dull. The book itself was a tough read and the tone, overall, was as if Clark were writing to the average walker trying to finish her first marathon. There's nothing here you can't find at Runner's World or a million other magazines/web sites. And I tend to think you can do better elsewhere. I would not recommend it. |
