2.0 out of 5 stars Sometimes a journey of self-discovery is not all that interesting
In this book, Nancy Crow seems to discover spatial relationships, shapes, and color theory which have been known by quilters for decades and more. Page upon page of color plates show her advancement from this theory to that, but become boringly repetitious. Reprints from her personal journal seem self-serving and at times much too self-indulgent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nancy Crow, August 21, 2006
This review is from: Nancy Crow (Hardcover)
As with everything she does, Nancy Crow has done an intensive, comprehensive and excellent job with her recently released book.
She shares her thoughts, struggles, ideas, creative process, influences, living and working environments and her powerful abstract art quilts.
The many four page fold outs allow the viewer to see in large scale her art quilts and design details and notes from her Sketchbooks, not normally done by many artists of her renown.
The full color image quality and the comprehensive text allow the reader to feel as if they are sitting in her studio having a discussion with Nancy.
A visual feast of powerful colors and designs as well as detailed text on her work and her processes makes this book a valuable resource for artists in all media, art collectors, gallery owners and museum and college libraries.

5.0 out of 5 stars An art book to treasure!, June 24, 2006

Wow! Visually this book is overwhelming with its gorgeous photographs of Nancy Crow's series of quilts to date. The evolution of her work is fascinating to read and she almost answers 'how does she do it?' You'll follow her thought processes as she leaves one of her original and successful series and proceeds to a totally different style. You'll learn how some of these compositions have been strongly influenced by what is happening around, or to, her life and how she allows these experiences to take her further in her art explorations.
The book does not detail the dimensions of her busy life which includes teaching classes around the world, speaking engagements, leading two art tours a year to international destinations, nurturing her home, family, and farm, and designing unique fabrics. Here is a person who lives her art.
A highly recommended book which will change your idea of the word "quilt.".

This book gives the reader the rare opportunity to have access to the life of a living artist whose experiences would otherwise never be exposed. Rarely is one offered such a revealing and unassuming entree into the life of a Master. Nancy freely offers her thoughts and speaks of her personal processes to look deep within herself for her continually evolving work. She invites us into her world and we are honored to be the along for the journey.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not Just for Art Quilters, July 5, 2006
This review is from: Nancy Crow (Hardcover)
This book not only chronicles the author's successful career in art quilt production, it is also a comprehensive and honest visual and verbal diary of all that makes artists who they are.

Nancy Crow's devotion to her art is plainly seen in this book. As an artist/teacher she has provided us with a book that could easily be regarded as a textbook or reference source for anyone with artistic and aesthetic aspirations. She gives us the opportunity to read her personal art diary notes; she shares thoughts on experiences that have had lasting influences on her work, --and ahe does so with no excuses.

The author gives continous credit to persons, places and experiences that have contributed to her development as a world-known quilt artist.

And, the book is beautiful evidence of Ms. Crow's attention to detail. It is stunningly illustrated with top-quality photos in a layout that is both inviting and purpose-oriented.

5.0 out of 5 stars Long Awaited Jem, July 4, 2006
This review is from: Nancy Crow (Hardcover)
As a great admirer of Nancy's work both as an artist and a teacher, it was very exciting to finally read this long awaited jem. It is the honesty about her work and the struggle that it takes to produce pieces of pure rare beauty that shines through as she shares herself with the reader. As an artist who is ahead of the contempory field of fibre artists, the insight we discover from her process gives hope to all who struggle in making original art.

This new book covers the spectrum from gorgeous coffee table art book to instruction on how to grow as an artist and a person. Nancy has struggled through the learning curve in a systematic and logical way, and shown others by example how to develop their personal talents and skills as fabric artists. Of course, the quilts are well beyond wonderful and the glimpes into her private life are inspiring. I wonder what comes next from Nancy Crow!

5.0 out of 5 stars intensely beautiful, July 6, 2006
This review is from: Nancy Crow (Hardcover)
This is one of the 10 best books I have ever read. It was so intense I could only manage 3 or 4 pages at a time. Nancy Crow shares not only the images of her work but her artistic and creative process, a gift of enormous value to the reader. This book would be of interest to anyone interested in art or quilts in particular.
