Nancy Drew Dossier: Resorting to Danger

Following in the footsteps of "Nancy Drew Dossier: Lights, Camera, Curses" is this seek and find adventure in which you locate various objects and combine them to perform a function, like using a pair of nail clippers to jimmy a door lock. The scenes are nicely hand-painted, but you have no freedom to move around and explore on your own. You are plunked into an area and you stay there until the tasks for that location are completed.

Nancy is hired by a posh spa, the Redondo, to solve the mystery behind a series of non-lethal bombings. The bombs when exploded will deposit gooey stuff on a rich client, such as Mrs. Montague who is splattered with green goo while sitting in a hot tub, and is understandably irate.

Nancy as usual is a general factotum who has to perform many tasks such as giving facials while scouring the various rooms of the resort for evidence and talking to the suspects. The character-suspects are an especially interesting motley bunch, including the eccentric biochemist who has created the beauty products sold in the salon and the creepy janitor who lives in the basement with her pet rats. All the characters are disgruntled. The voice acting is terrific.

There are mini-games to be played along the way and these are fresh and pleasant but not very hard except for the last one. (You may have to go to Google as I did to look up information about Greek mythology to solve it). Only one mini-game is timed. You cannot by-pass the mini-games. Nancy has to remember clues pertaining to things people have said as she will be quizzed on their remarks. You have to select the right remark for the game to advance. (This feature I do not care for as it is disruptive and rather pointless). There are six different endings, depending on how the game is played so you can play again and again and take a different path to the solution each time.

I enjoyed playing "Resorting to Danger" but it is totally different from classic ND adventures such as "Curse of Blackmoor Manor." It is a fun escape. And because it is pleasurable, funny, and also easy it will appeal to many, including kids. This is a casual game and as such has its place and you can meander along and have a good time in the process without undue sweat...until you get to that last mini-game.

Trying to please Mama, Papa and Baby Bear in the same game is a formidable task as the porridge is always going to be too hot for somebody. For many "Ransom of the Seven Ships" is too hard; for many the "Dossier" games are too easy. Hopefully, HER's next offering, "Warnings in Waverly Academy" due out in October 2009, will be like "Curse of Blackmoor Manor".

"Nancy Drew:Resorting to Danger" is not like the traditional Nancy Drew games. It is a seek and find game, kind of like I Spy, except a little bit harder because you have to put two items together to get a result. This is what I thought of it:

Story-The story is that the Redondo, a luxury spa for the wealthy and beautiful, has called you to come pose as the general assistant and find out who has been exploding bombs in the spa. However at the same time you have to keep the customers happy.

Graphics-They are cartoony, not 3D like the other series. You have to find the items on a still, cartoony picture.

Sound-Happy music that might sound like elevator or shopping music. Not bad, but it does get annoying after playing the game through.

Gameplay-Like I said, there is a still picture on which you have to find objects to complete a task. For instance, you might have a locked door, so you see a key sticking out from under a rug. You select the rug, select lift, and the key is exposed for you to match with the locked door. Simplistic with a little bit of logic mixed in! Also there are a few minigame that you have to complete every now and then. Out of the 4 minigames, only one was really annoying, and only one did I really like.

Fun-It is a really fun game that has a lot of replay value. The replay value is because there are 6 different ending. Yes, SIX! You can change the ending about halfway through, and it's quite obvious how to do it. It's fun.

Length-The major downfall was the length. It lasted me about 3 hours. I was so disappointed that it was that short!

So, a word to the wise, only get this game if you can get it really cheap! Do you really want to pay $15-$20 for 3 hours? Yes, it is a really fun 3 hours. Yes, I gave it 4 stars, but it is still only 3 hours!

If you do not have enough time to play the full Nancy Drew games, these dossiers are great. They progress quickly, are full of hidden objects, and I really liked the fact that they have an Arcade built in so you can play some of the games in the story as many times as you wish. All in all an enjoyable game. I'll probably buy a couple more.

Fun game for a senior, bought it to get more familiar with my computer. It is challenging and helps me to have to think and use my brain more. My grandkids enjoy it when they are over.

This was a fun game, but wasn't quite as fun as the usual Nancy Drews. Fairly good plot, functions of play were functional. Everything was scaled down and it played to quickly. But I do appreciate them making another game to get us ND junkies through until the next release of their bigger games :).

I think there are two of these "Nancy Drew Dossier" games. They are not the same as the regular Nancy Drew mysteries, but for me at least, they are a lot of fun.

This game belongs to the genre of games I have heard called "hunt and peck" or "point and click". Some people just flat don't like the style of these games, but I'm not one of them. I find them to be entertaining and relaxing.

I have played a couple of other games of this type and I find the Nancy Drew to be better all around, better thought out, better graphics, a better story line.

Obviously, I liked this very much. I think whether you like it or not will depend on whether you like this type of game or not. If you do, I heartily recommend this one.

My daughter loves Nancy Drew so I got her this game. It moved really fast and she was finished with it in a few days. She has not played it again, but she did enjoy it when she did play. Might be better off getting it used then buying new.

The entire game only takes about 3-4 hours to play which was really my main disappointment with this purchase. However, you can purchase it for less then seven dollars as a video download on Amazon -- and then it is a bargain. This is a new format for HER Interactive. It eliminates many of the aspects of the other Nancy Drew games that I find frustrating/boring. The dialog is snappier and there is much less of it. You spend less time navigating Nancy from location to location. There are plenty of mini games and the hidden object component is fun. The objects are very easy to find as your curser glows and sparkles as you pass over (or get close to) an object. Some of the mini games are repetitive although they do get more challenging as you progress through the game. If I was able to change the game, I would make it longer and add more puzzles. I was able to complete the entire game easily without resorting to the Internet for hints. I would definitely buy more in this series if they were available as inexpensive video downloads. They are definitely not worth the full price.

I just love the new Nancy Drew Dossier series! Great story, great puzzles. I couldn't put this game down.
