I own every single Nancy Drew game and enjoy replaying them over and over. "The Shattered Medallion" is the most disappointing release to date.

It's not that "The Shattered Medallion" isn't enjoyable. It moves along quickly and the puzzles are pretty fun and easy (save for the last one). The reality show angle, though incredibly silly, does give a fun variety of competitive tasks. The graphics are beautiful and this time there's also lots of different types of places to explore (unlike recent games like "The Captive Curse," "Warnings at Waverly Academy," and "The Deadly Device").

But this 30th game will be only memorable for how bad it is. Here are 10 reasons why it fails:

1. I am a seasoned player of these games, yes, but I finished the game in the course of an afternoon. That's absurd. The puzzles are often face-palmingly easy--I even had to make up a word to describe how lazy they are... The reality show part of the game ends really quickly, so I figured there must be a second half to the game to come to bulk up the playing time. There was like one additional scene. Which leads to the second problem...

2. THERE IS NO MYSTERY. The game ended and Nancy was reading her letter to Ned, and I was on the edge of my seat because I couldn't wait for her to explain just what it was she exactly did. I still don't know what it was that I "solved." There's a little suspicious behavior here and there, but Sonny's backstory stuff ends up moving to the front and it really doesn't hold any weight, nor does it at all tie with the reality show premise. That's another thing...

3. Why the heck did they set this in a reality show?

2.0 out of 5 stars Do Not Expect a Mystery!! May 20, 2014
As a long-time Nancy Drew game player (over a decade), I feel terrible writing this review. :( But the truth is, this game isn't great, it's not even good, in my opinion. It is my least favorite game, even below "Secrets Can Kill" (remastered and original). Like I always do for Nancy Drew games, I'm going to break the game down into different categories and rate those on a 1-10 scale.

PLOT: This is probably the most disappointing aspect of this game. There seriously is no plot, and you find this out quite quickly. The plotline is this: you're on a game show. You suspect Sonny Joon is up to something, but what?? There is absolutely no mystery, no suspense, and no action in this game. Everything felt like mini-game after mini-game, with no real plot development. The plot line also really resides on if you know who Sonny Joon is. If you haven't played most of the previous Nancy Drew games, you will be utterly lost. I just kept waiting for the plot to improve, but it didn't... :( 2/10

CHARACTERS: The characters are all dull and unimaginative, with the exception of Bess. There is no real character development, and no background story which was very disappointing. Sonny himself wasn't all that exciting; at first he was entertaining, but he ending up being boring also. I have been a Joon fan until this game. This game makes me actually not like Sonny... My favorite character is either Bess or Patrick. Another thing to consider that made me very sad is the fact that there are no phone friends. You can call one person later in the game, but it's not someone that I would consider "fun". Overall: 4/10

LENGTH: Another bad aspect. The game only took me 6 hours and 20 minutes which is shorter than most new games and that was with absolutely NO SPOILERS.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing!! May 20, 2014
By MarieS
I have been an avid ND gamer for over 10 yrs, and I can easily say this was the worst one so far for many reasons:
- Game time: Way too short! Even then this was the very first time I couldn't wait to get the game over and done with so I could move on in life. Just when the game could have gotten interesting, they cut it short and ended it abruptly.
- Ending: What happened? There was no point or conclusion in the ending. No mystery was ever solved! And the end puzzle was so difficult and confusing.
- Plot: Many times I felt rushed because it wasn't clear if the reality tv challenges were timed. And again there was no mystery to solve! There was no real culprit. All I remember is that there are games that you played as part of the show and on the side Sonny wanted your help in finding something. Everything else was beyond cryptic that it was confusing.
- Characters: Do people really talk like this? It seems that other reviewers enjoyed the conversations but to me it was all rambling on and on about irrelevant topics. I couldn't get a straightforward answer from many of them, Patrick or whatever his name is was the worst! In past games you would ask a question and get a straight answer with some hints. In this game you get nothing because the questions that are asked are also very stupid.
- Puzzles: All too easy except the final one which is the complete opposite.

HerInteractive really spent too much time perfecting the graphics as opposed to the content on this one. Don't bother to buy it!
