More About the Author

I write. That's rather obvious. Mostly I write about things that blow my skirt up. Humor is a big--huge--part of everything I do. But then there's that soft, squishy sentimental part of me that can't help but rear its heartfelt head. And since I like to tell people what to do every chance I get, I write a lot of how-to books, blogs, and articles.

Humorous. Heartfelt. How-to. Three great tastes that taste great together, at least in my cereal bowl.

So let's get down to it. I know you don't have all day to ogle my bio, as much as a girl can dream. Here's what you should know off the bat: I'm the New York Times best-selling author of more than 25 books and, per Reader's Digest, one of the four funniest bloggers in the US. Pretty cool, eh?

I've written on everything under the sun for national magazines and websites like the Huffington Post, Allure, and Salon, and I currently write a books column for today.com. In addition to bookshelves, newsstands, and your favorite websites, you can also find me online at Things I Want to Punch in the Face (thingsiwanttopunchintheface.blogspot.com).

Along with fellow author and publishing pro Kerry Colburn, I deliver publishing talks, workshops, and webinars to help burgeoning authors get published through The Business of Books (bizofbooks.com). You can also catch me in university auditoriums, where I offer up side-splitting but informative slide-show presentations based on my popular books.

Originally from Southwestern Michigan, I currently live in Seattle, where I eschew fleece while eating more fish and chips than is good for me.

This miniature book makes the PERFECT stocking stuffer or small gift for any Nancy Drew fan, or anybody who read Nancy Drew growing up, even if they haven't kept that interest in later life. It gets 5 stars just for the nostalgia value, and I love the way it makes gentle, affectionate fun of the girl genius who could do everything (paint like Picasso, ski like a pro, sing, dance, act, ride horses like a champion.....oh, and I guess she was a detective, too!).

The book, complete with a hanging magnifying glass bookmark on an attached ribbon, is divided into sections: Survival Strategies, Dating: A Primer, Sleuthing 101, The Delicate Art of Etiquette, Wilderness Tips, On Being a Lady, Powers of Observation, and Accoutrements. Many of the book covers and interior illustrations we remember are reproduced throughout, and the text consists of tips and the titles of the book the tip comes from.

As a single example, here's my personal favorite: "If you see something resembling a shark in a river, don't fret. It's more likely to be a small submarine operated by thieves." -- The Mystery of Lilac Inn. I never in a million years would have remembered that on my own, but it all comes back when you read this little gem! What fun!

5.0 out of 5 stars We All Love This Book At My House May 14, 2007
Format:Hardcover
I got this book for my birthday, and then found out that I am not the only woman who has read 50 odd Nancy Drew books. . .my daughter, my students, my neighbors all confess . . . everyone loves Nancy Drew, and consequently, loves this book.

We've set up a "Detective Cabinet" with spy-glasses and flashlights so that we can solve such common dilemmas as "The Mystery of the Missing House Keys" and "The Secret of the Laundry Room", now that we've been reminded of how problems are solved in River Heights.

This book is sheer inspiration . . . a MUST read.

This is a small book...maybe 2" square? I got it for a cousin as we used to be obsessed with Nancy Drew when we were kids. Fun little stocking stuffer.

1.0 out of 5 stars TINY Book!
Don't skip the dimensions listing! This book is 1 and a half inches tall. Rediculous, the tiny size should be in the title because the pictures do not make it obvious. Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Cute, but I wish there was more to the book
This is a cute book, but I just wish there was a little more substance to it. Still, as a book that fits in the palm of one's hand, I guess it's hard to expect more from it.
